Def Tech Mythos ST or Mythos STS 5.1 system?

Perhaps a strange question on a Polk Audio forum but I've read some good info on the Def Tech Zmyhtos ST speakers here.

I am about to pull the trigger on a Def Tech Mythos ST system but am undecided which system to buy.

System one is 2x Mythos ST for front, 2x Mythos STS for surround plus a Mythos Ten as center.
System two is 2x Mythos STS front, 2x Mythos STS for surround and Mythos Nine for center.

System two will save me $1,000 and has the benefit of exact timbre-matched speakers all around.
System one has the top of the line front and center speakers and has perhaps some extra output. I have a very large room (1,000 sq.ft.).

I will have a SVS PB-13 Ultra or JL Audio Fathom f113 subwoofer for LFE.
The Mythos speakers will be powered by a Sunfire Cinema Grand Signature 5x400W amplifier.

Any opinions from someone who has listened to both the ST and STS and can comment on the differences would be appreciated.

I dont have any direct experience with the different Mythos speakers, but I have heard the STS and was pretty impressed. Either way, you're building a pretty awsome rig. Nice amp and sub choices. Welcome to Club Polk I guess and good luck with your system.

And your reason to recommend System one?

Thanks for the suggestion but the Polk LSi speakers are too big.
I am looking for something elegant without sacrificing sound quality.
The Mythos ST's are 'wife approved'!

I've looked at the Polk VM30 specs but I don't think they can compete with the Mythos ST or STS.

The Mythos dig much lower but the high end is a little softer on the Polk. The Mythos is a very nice loudspeaker overall.

Just FYI: The company was started by Sandy Gross, one of the original Polk Audio founders.

I like the def tech's much better than the VM series. I if sold out on Polk for something in the same price range, it would be for Definitive. Very nice speakers in attractive packages.

i love polk since listening to them in the store and starting my collection of them... they are the BEST speakers on the market except for one brand... the holy grail DefTech company but there prices are out of my range :D I envy you and highly recommend the Mythos ST all around! basically the same speaker with less power handling. Have you heard these in stores? they have amazing depth and clarity at higher volumes. The guy at Vann's (here in montana) says DefTech was a polk engineer who started his own company, made a pretty penny, then sold the company back to polk. I dont know if this is true but its a nice story. Good luck and make sure to show us your HT setup!

Tell your guy he's a moron.

Matt Polk, Sandy Gross and George Klopfer started Polk Audio. Sandy left due to some creative differences and DefTech was born. Polk did NOT buy DefTech and both companies are currently owned by DEI. Sandy sold DT years ago and up until recently still maintained an active role within the company. His replacement at DefTech? None other than Polkasaurus Rex, Paul DiComo. Sandy is currently enjoying retirement and getting a nice tan.

haha someone had their story strewed. but seriously DefTech are some beautiful speakers (both sound and appearance) and from listening to klipsch, polk, deftech, boston, bose(yuck), infinity, and energy and by far the cleanest were the DefTech and polk was second (in my opinion).

I own the Mythos ST fronts 10 center and 10 rears. If you are going to use the Fathom f113(which I think is a much better sub then the SVS) then I see no reason to own STS rears. I think you should get the 10 rears. They are incredible for both music and movies. I love them. If you are going to use towers as rears then why not just spend it and get ST's for rears. I suggest building some kind of platform to get them off the ground and get the tweeter at 72 inches. This will give you incredible surround channels. They are tall speakers and are almost tall enough for surround on the floor but lifting them will be much better.
I suggest using the Mythos ST subs as well as the f113. This will give you very even coverage in all seating locations. It's easy to setup as well as I have done it tons of times.
I really like the STS speakers as well. They are amazing and for the money can't be beat. I think they are better suited for a smaller room. ST will cover your room well.
There is nothing offered from polk that can challenge the Mythos series for all duties. They are amazing. The LSi may compete for music but I feel they are behind in overall clarity and control. Not to mention they get dusted for movies. This is my opinion as I have owned both.
Good luck with your system. If you search on here , you can check out mine.

i was under the impression that with any speaker you buy they tweeter's should be ear level at the viewing position..

why did you suggest 72 inches? is he watching standing up?? lol

    just wondering...

Rear channel speakers are suppose to be 2 to 3 feet above listening height. I have found 72 inches to the tweeters works best in all rooms.

I can't speak for the Mythos, but I've heard several hours worth the music on deftech BP7000SC Bipolars, and I like them a lot except that the highs are much more laid back and rolled off compared to my SDAs. All in all, I'd say you can't go wrong.

Get the Super towers (system 1), heard AC/DC on both towers (same gear) at my local HI-FI shop ( www.upstairsaudio.com ) when the thunderstruck and you needed to hear the sound of the drums, the super towers where the sh@t!! They out shine the rest of def-techs by 10-1.

As for movies i watched sections of Kill-bill and Jurassic park (two of my favorite movies) again the super towers kicked ****. In Jurassic park (this is with the sub off mind you) the seen where there T-Rex first breaks free and makes the water shake. The bass at point in the movie really moves you and makes you feel like a T-rex is in the room on the Mythos ST. Compared to the mythos sts, well there is no comparison the super tower is clearly the better speaker.

Maybe just a noobs opinion but the super towers are worth every penny of increased coast.

also on a side note the super towers don't just have more out-put they have better out-put. So to answer your question you will NOT get the same result with a Good sub and the sts compared to a good sub and the ST.

i have heard the same thing. i was considering changing my center to the bigger more expensive mythos eight or ten ( i have the three now ) several people suggested to keep saving until i could get the super towers as well... they said essentially the same thing that the super towers are the best of the line and i should buy those first and fill in the rest of the speakers as time allows.

I pulled the plug and bought a pair of Mythos ST speakers.
They were sold to me as new, although they had been in the showroom.
When I got home I saw on the boxes that they had been manufactured in July of 2007 (!). Together with some minor damages on the speakers and broken off grille pins I was not happy but luckily I managed to get a fresh pair of speakers from the dealer but at the same discounted price.
I also bought a Mythos Ten center.

The Mythos surrounds will have to wait until I have sold my Sunfire CRM-2 speakers.

I've also sold my SVS PB13-Ultra subwoofers and will almost certainly order a Seaton Submersive subwoofer.

I am very pleased with the sound and the performance of the ST towers so far. It took some fiddling to calibrate the internal subwoofers but I managed to figure that out.

Strangely enough the Sunfire CRM-2 which I still use as surrounds are quite a good match sonically with the Mythos speakers.
