Edison? Heh, tommy wishes he was that smart.

Nikola Tesla holds the credit for these achievements.

I dedecate my 500th post to, in my opinion, the most intricate and astounding mind, and most incredible inventor to ever grace this little mass of floating rock.

Ahh, the world would be so behind in technology if it weren't for him...yet you hear soooooo little about his impressive impact.

For a man whose electrical achievements are second to none, his persona and lackluster business skills left him penniless and broken, as the abundant life energy poured from his body.

We would be struggling to achieve what he did many years ago, right now...

Telsa is my absolute Hero. His insight is responsible for the success of Westinghouse. It is unfortunate that good business men can over shadow and take credit for concepts of the truely brilliant.

    Hats off to Tesla!

    Awesome pics.

What kind of voltage/amperage are we talking here?

    Cheers,

"Primary voltages run up to 15,000 volts, but the discharger puts out anywhere from a quarter-million to a couple million volts depending on the input power."

"while voltage will increase, the amperage will decrease, again due to conservation of energy"

I guess the amperage can be increased depending on your power supply. I'm not very electrically inclined, so I can't give out specifics. I'm sure one of you guys can put things in perspective.

I've seen a Tesla coil in person at the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles.
It's walled in behind a glass and metal cage. Once you hear it you'll never forget it.

What does it sound like? Were you hearing the coil itself or the snap crackle and pop of the electrical charge??

Don't know much about Tesla, but I understand he was discredited because some of his inventions could create energy very cheaply. Good for mankind, bad for big business. Is this true?

When one of Tesla's engineers said, "Looks as if Marconi got the jump on you," Tesla replied, "Marconi is a good fellow. Let him continue. He is using 17 of my patents."

I'm a telecom guy, and Tesla had little to do with any of that specifically. He's cool, but Marconi is my master.

Another little interesting Tesla/Westinghouse fact is that when states started using electric chairs for execution back in the 20's, it became known for awhile to be "Westinghoused" if you were executed since they found AC was better than DC.

Coolest display of electricity I've ever seen was the Museum of Science in Boston. They have a giant Van de Graf generator (like, 30 feet tall.... 5 million volts), and a guy in a metal cage sits next to it and gets hit by, essentially, lightening.

    Badass.
