Over the speed limit by 35 mph? Pay fine of $300K

I kid you not....

BBC article on record speeding fine
The man was reportedly caught driving a red Ferrari Testarossa at 137km/h (85mph) through a village.

The penalty was calculated based on the unnamed motorist's wealth - assessed by the court as $22.7m (£14.1m) - and because he was a repeat offender.

It is more than double Switzerland's previous record speeding fine - handed to a Porsche driver in Zurich in 2008.

In the latest case, the motorist was clocked speeding 57km/h (35mph) faster than the limit, according to the cantonal court in St Gallen, eastern Switzerland.

"The accused ignored elementary traffic rules with a powerful vehicle out of a pure desire for speed," the court said in its judgement.

Swiss media reported that the man owns a villa with five luxury cars, including the Ferrari.

No sympathy. If you can afford a Testarosa, you can afford the insurance, and ALLLLL the other expenses that come with it.

This is an example of Socialism. He is being punished for being rich.

I am not saying that he should not have some punishment by breaking the law and being a repeat offender. A more fitting punishment would be suspending his license to drive.

For the record, I hate socialism, but also feel no pity for rich people acting stupid.

"Speeding" isn't necessarily acting stupid. 35 mph over the speed limit is certainly excessive but I can't say I've never done it, and I certainly have never owned a Ferrari.

As far as the fine goes... the point of a fine is a deterrent / punishment, so I guess it makes sense that it should be something that the offender would "feel". If I got a ticket for 300 bucks, it would definitely hurt, and it's a deterrent when I notice my speedo going up past 80. That guy could get 300 dollar tickets all day long and it wouldn't deter him in the slightest.

So while I don't like the idea that that money is going to big brother, philosophically it does make sense.

Interesting take on it. So lets move that thought elsewhere. You pay 100 bucks for license plates now, just an example, you would have no problem paying 500 because maybe you could afford it?

You and your buddy park in a no parking zone. Your ticket is 300 and his is 20 bucks...no problem with that ?

You get a ticket for jaywalking, your neighbor does too since your walking together, your ticket is 200 and his is 10 bucks. Seems fair.

You go in the hospital for kidney stones, your bill, because you could afford it, is 20 grand, the person next to you, same thing, pays 200 bucks. Yeah, thats fair.

In all those scenario's, who makes out ? Where is the motivation to make more money as long as there are enough of those " WHO COULD AFFORD IT" to cover your butt ?

Personally I agree with this. A fine for breaking the law and endangering people is supposed to detour the activity. If that guy gets charged $400 for the offense, that certainly will not be a detourant. 300K is damn sure a detourant. I am not at all saying that ALL fines should be based on wealth or income, but this makes some sense to me. Admittedly, there is a very fine line here!!!! Look at it this way - it's still much cheaper than the lawsuit that would happen if he killed someone while doing that stupid crap.

Exactly. It's not about the money, it's about your driving privileges.

If you're seriously a repeat offender, they can suspend based on accumulated infraction points. There's no need to cover a mortgage with someone else's speeding charge.

I kind of like detour-ant. It makes you think of the same thing, going around the wanted path.

However, it definitely comes from deter.

Plus impounding the car for 6 months to make sure he's not driving it. That way, all the poor guys at the impound yard could have some fun.

No, I am not supporting any kind of socialism or supporting in anyway that rich people should be punished harsher. The only reason I am saying is coz I hate that California to be the poorest among the 48 states and without a budget plan after the end of fiscal years for many past years.

Hold on to your hats and glasses boys and girls; If you think this can't happen in America, you may be in for a rude awakening. A wealth tax may in it's current form be unconstitutional, but the estate tax sets a very dangerous precedent for these matters.

No sympathy for the speed junky, but at the same time, VERY slippery slope.

Of course, the Ferrari in question is capable of stopping from 85mph faster than most cars can from 30mph. Therefore, I don't see the problem.

Are you out of your gourd? All California does is tax tax tax up the ****. THe problem isn't that they need more income, it's that they need to learn how to spend the money they already rape their citizens out of. YOu LITERALLY cannot cross a street in California without being ticketed, and you think stiffer fines are what will help the state out of the mess it's in?! HA!

You would probably know that the Californians knew about the up up in the **** taxes we are paying. :) And trust me, we are sick of it. And also, you don't know how crazy some of these celebs drive on the streets around those areas. They are putting every other drivers at risk for the sake of a minute less of their time sitting in the vehicle. I know they are important and all but hey, it's someone else life involved in it too.

Not only that but if there is a traffic light on that road lives will actually be saved. For example, if the light turns yellow the Ferrari will easily make it through before turning red. The guy going 30 will not make it, pull out in front of a school bus and kill all the passengers. Think of the children!

Agreed... but going one step further and perhaps most appropriate would be to impound the car as well, seeing as though he is a repeat offender. That is what can and does happen with drunk drivers all the time.
