I don't know about Russ but I'm using a boom truck. You might want to be careful as well. I've already heard stories of Russ climbing poles with a cartons of eggs in hand...

Congrats Tom. I know what it is like to shut down a personally owned business. In the long run it is a relief however in that you don't have to work 120 hours a week to keep afloat and ahead of the game.

    Good luck Brother.

    Good luck treitz!

I understand what you experienced. Business is way tough right now and being self-employed (since 1996) has become a huge challenge. I just closed out 2009 to learn we dropped 60% below what we did in 2007 (our record year) and then 51% below what we did last year. You know the problems; both sales and profit per sale are down, some customers don't pay and some take 6 months to do so.

I used to create jobs, but have laid off 60% of my workforce during the past 18 months and don't really see anything on the horizon to indicate we will ever add a position again.

Thank God someone was out there hiring to give you an opportunity.

Damn, that could be a quote from me. 2007 was our record year as well.

Since then? Everything has gone spinning on a downward spiral. There are indications that things are bouncing back but for me? Eh, I've had enough of it. Time to move on.

Good luck in all of the privately owned ventures out there. I wish you all the luck that may come your way. Prayers sent.

I admire the guts and determination you business owners have. I know I don't have what it takes to do what you folks have and do. My father was a small business owner and I saw the pride he took in operating it. I'm sure the same pride is evident in you also. My dad eventually wore out and went to work for somebody. It seems it was both the happiest and saddest day of his life.

Thanks for trying to keep folks at work and our country running. You guys are what makes this country great.

Hey, Congrats on the new job.
I've been struggling for a couple of years now and that thought has crossed my mind numerous times the last year.
My problem is I hit 60 and unless someone is working on the "Adopt A Geezer" program I'll have to tough it out and adapt to a new world.
It sounds like you've made a positive move. I'm sure it'll slow down the grey hairs a bit.
Good thoughts for you and yours.

I'm sorry you had to close up shop, BUT, the good news is.....welcome back to the LABOR pool. It's a LOT less stressful than being in MGMT.
And, it sounds like your position is going to require even less customer service/ contact than mine.
    Congrats.

Ladies and Gentlemen of Club Polk. I'd like to take the time to thanks everybody once again for the well wishes. It's been a while since this thread was active but I thought it would be good to chime in and give an update.

Just a few hours ago, I put in my 2-weeks notice. Many of you know that Russ has since gotten promoted and is currently down in Florida [Congrat's again to him]. In two weeks, the business will be re-launched and the tools that have just been sitting idle for all these years will be brought back to full use. During this two week time frame the licensing, insurance, workman's comp, accounting, trailer and associated shelving/security/accessories, lining up employees along with all of the other fun stuff a businessman has to go through will be done. That should turn out to be some REAL fun whilst working a full time job at the same time [not!] but ya' gotta do what you gotta' do, if you know what I mean.

Throughout this past year, I have started seeing some real signs that the economy has gotten much better in our area. I was recently approached about a month and a half ago with a proposal from an old client of mine. Turns out his boss had already seen some of my work right before I pulled the plug. They both were impressed enough to offer me something worthy of consideration. While at first my thoughts were "no", the conversations continued and today I met up with both of them and went over the fine details and numbers. It's a "go".

There is more to this story that may or may not be revealed and I will say, it was really, really nice to get a steady paycheck throughout the roughest part of the economic downturn. For that and the hookup from Russ, I am truly thankful. My son will be turning 4 on July 4th and since then, my wife has landed a killer job with nice pay for about a year, followed by a smokin' raise, bonus and subsequent promotion a couple of months ago. The time has come to once again, stop working for "the man" and get on with business.

    More later....

    Tom
