Dear all,

*sniff sniff...

I have an Onkyo TS605 receiver that is currently running my LSI7 speakers. My wife bought me a CSI10 center to run with this receiver but I do not know what is wrong with it. The system immediately shuts off once I enabled the center feature in the menu. I can turn it on but it immediately shuts off. It runs fine with the two speakers. Do you guys have any ideas what is wrong with my system?

Here are a few steps to try:

Disconnect the center channel and connect an LSI7 to the center channel and test it in 5.1 mode.

Check the center channel and the speaker for any shorts. Try swapping the wire from the other channels to the center.

Make sure your receiver can run your LSI7's, they are 4 ohm speakers and possibly the addition of another channel put it over the top (unlikely, but possible). The Onkyo is not really rated for 4 ohms.

More than likely something is shorted.

Thanks Nguyen. I will try this after I clean out my X'mast tree that is sitting next to the rack. Possibly my receiver is not rated for 4 ohms

I'm quite positive it's not rated for 4 ohms. Still, it shouldn't shut off immediately just because of that.
    I'd check for shorts first.

+1, it isn't "rated" for 4 ohms, but it will probably drive them at moderate levels, for awhile. Also, that CS10 is not the timbre match for your LSi's, it is meant for the TSi line. Don't think that is the root of the problem, but they may not sound all that well together even if you do get it working. Do yourself a favor and look into a LSiC for your center. If you do that, be careful with the volume knob as you will then have three 4 ohm speakers on a receiver that isn't very efficent at driving 4 ohm speakers.

Check all of your connections and make sure there aren't any frayed wires or loose binding posts. This could send your AVR into protect mode as you're dropping the resistance even further. Have those LSi's running at 4 ohms isn't helping either. Your receiver does't have preouts to add an amp, so either look into a new AVR and a 4 ohm stable amp, or pick up some TSi series mains to match that CS10 center. Using LSi7's and the 605 is only going to get you into trouble. If you keep adding speakers, just be careful with the volume, or your AVR could overheat and burn up. Good luck

    Hi All,

Sorry for the late response. I finanlly able to play around with it after getting rid of the X'mast tree. The problem is I am using a speaker cable that has 2 reds and whites. Inside the wall, I only use one of the pairs, but the end of the cable, i merged both up and connected to the receiver. This was prewire a while back and i totally forgot about it. This causes shortage because the cables inside the wall touches each other.

The reason why I'm using this center is because the size is smaller than the CSIc250. I do not have a lot of room to cut and hide it inside the wall.

DO you guys know any good Onkyo receiver that I can run this LSI7 & CSIc, in case I have a better place to store this center? I mostly use these speakers for Karaoke

Any TX-SR7XXX or higher will have pre outs for adding an external amp, which IMHO with an Onkyo will be a must to be able to get the most out of those LSi's. I have a TX-SR806 and love it, matter of fact there was one for sale here last week for $400, needless to say it didn't last long. Look into the TX-SR875, or the new NR series if you want something that MAY be able to run those LSi's fairly well without an amp. The 7's may not be huge speakers, but the issue is they are 4 ohms. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jeff. 400$ for the SR806? Geez.. I bought my 605 for that price. How does the external amp work? Will it still produce surround sound if needed? It is not like I have a surround sound speakers setup yet but I am curious on how it works and maybe I can prepare for the future purchases

No problem, and yeah that 806 was a steal at $400. I paid $750 for mine back when it first came out back in Sep. 09. As for the external amp it is a better way of powering your speakers. The external amp will provide better/more/cleaner power for you speakers and they will run more efficently. Most AVR's (yours included) only have one power source for the speakers, and it is split up amongst all the channels being driven. Say your AVR is rated at 100W per channel (keep in mind that most companies rate their AVR's with only 2 channels being driven) it will drop off considerably for any other channel being driven, and with a 5.1 running you will be lucky to be getting half that to your speakers. The amps have seperate powersources for each channel, so if it is rated for 100W per channel, each speaker will be getting 100W. Only problem is in order to run an external amp, your AVR has to have pre-outs to hook the amp up to, your 605 does not have them. If you wanted to run an external amp, you would have to upgrade your AVR to the TX SR7XXX or higher series with Onkyo in order to get a model that has pre-outs. The amp will still provide surround sound and you can get a seperate amp for each channel (monoblocks) or get a 5 channel amp for a 5.1 or even a 3 channel and a 2 channel for 5.1, etc. Most people will run their front three off a 3 channel amp and let the AVR power the surrounds. It is mostly up to budget and space restraints as amp tend to be on the beefy side. Hope this helps and good luck.
