Just curious what people would buy. I am thinking about changing my receiver. So the two receivers that I am looking at are the Yamaha RX-V3900 or the Onkyo TX-NR807. The Onkyo is a lot less for about $817.00 at Crutchfield compared to $1800.00 for the Yamaha.

Main Speakers - Polk Audio RT 2000I
Center Speaker - Polk Audio CSI 400I
Rear speakers - Polk Audio FX 500I
10" Sub - Polk Audio PSW 450
Receiver - Onkyo TX-NR807
Onkyo C-S5VL CD player
Yamaha TX-497 tuner
Sony PS-LX110 turntable
Sony Bravia KDL-52XBR9
PS3 120GB

Cheaper Yami gear sucks when it comes to AVR's.

Well I think I will probably go with the Onkyo receiver because you get almost the same power for a whole lot less. I will have to call Best Buy when they open to see if I can exchange my Yamaha receiver for the new one. Hope I don't get hit with a restocking fee because its been about 50 days.

With that budget, I'd be all over an SC series Elite. The Onkyo 807 is a nice alternative though.

I'm in the middle of trying to decide on a receiver too. So many choices it's a tough dilemma. If money wasn't an object would everyone opt for a badass Elite or something else?

I went with a Harman Kardon AVR-3550HD. Not many HK owners, but I formerly owned and loved my AVR-635 so I stayed in the family.

I am not using all the HDMI features at this time (just component in and out) until I find a way to run HDMI from my audio close to my screen. Tried to do it through the attic over the holidays, but couldn't get the runs fished through. Now thinking of going through the wall outside via pvc, but I'm a little worried about putting holes in my structure and having pvc elbows running from my brick wall.

Those coolers are just what I need for my 805!

BTW..to OP...if you're going to go Onkyo I'd step up to the 1007--more real power, Burr Brown DACs, HUGE EL transformer...bigger caps and other features. The 807 will strain if it tries to power a 9.2 set up....check out the reviews and bench tests for all channels driven--it puts out less power than the 806 and much less than the 805 and 1007.

I have owned several of both. Even the Z-9 Yammy. What I have realized is that yammy is great for music and onkyo/integra is frigin awesome for movies. The Yammys that I have owned have seemed to run very very HOT. The are both good products. The onkyo just has way more depth. If you look around the flagship Integra DTR 9.9 can be had new for around $1600 and Onkyo 9?? for around a $950 or so. The Integra B stock dtr 9.9 b stock are around for $1200. If you are a movie buff these will both push most any speaker. And the specs on these things are great.

Just picked up the Onkyo SR-707 to power my new Polk A7s, CSi center, FXi A6 surrounds (surrounds still in transit), and the PSW111 sub.

    Install planned for Saturday.

Tried to spend more money but couldn't find anything better to balance with my system - and can't wait to hear the Pure Audio (?) thru the A7s.

Have had Onkyo before as well as Sony, Yamaha, Marantz ... all good experiences, and this time I felt the 707 - at $599 - was an easy investment in a certified receiver put out by a good producer.

For that kind of coin you may want to consider the NAD line.

You mean a used NAD, I assume, because no new NAD can match that 707 feature set at that price? As for sound that's another story...but for HT Onkyo is good enough.

At $1800 you can find a new NAD. Yes, for the $800+ price you would have to go used. I think the NAD will blow away most AVRs in its price range.

Got you....that's what I thought. I didn't catch that you were referring to the OP because I got side-tracked by our new member above. 1800 can buy you a lot of receiver--there are many choices around that price point. I haven't heard any NADs recently...but I've been under the impression that they were not what they used to be?

But I couldn't really confirm that because I really don't know first hand.

Just to give you an idea. I own an NAD T765. I use RT2000Ps for the fronts, a CS350LS, and RT/FXs for the rears and have no need for outboard amplification. The NAD just keeps giving for HT and Music.

I have sold my 805 couple years ago and regreted it so recently, I bought the 876 from J & R after I returned the 1007 to Fry's since I cannot use the 9.2 set up in my small room . I am very happy with the Onkyo.

Give it some good ventilation on top and a couple of cooling fans and you will not regret it. Enjoy!

For H/T application, Onkyo and Pio Elite AVRs are at the point of diminishing return. I have owned Rotel, B &K, Anthem and Parasound separates for H/T in the past...it's not worth it to me to go thru that route again.

NAD is okay for a step above low-end mass production made in CHINA stuff but I prefer Rotel and Parasound to the NAD if I have to make a choice.

For 2 channel analog audio, it's another story since the sky is the limit.

They run a little warm. It's nothing to worry about unless you like to worry. Just use common sense and don't stuff it in a small enclosed cabinet with no ventilation.

Yes , indeed Onkyo AVR runs very hot so is my Krell amp. If you want cool running AVR, go with the Pio Elite SC05 or SC25...
