I just bought the above (except the sub). My first setup!

Hmmm......so my receiver selection has reduced. I looked for price comparison and this is what I think I can get for less than $500:

HK AVR 354 - Refurb/Used
Yamaha RX-V765 - Refurb/Used
Onkyo TX-SR707 - New

Still long way to go before it narrows down to 1 for me.:( I guess I need more help!

I read the Pioneer specs and it also looks very good. It has 1080p upscaling and THV processing, just like Onkyo707. Thanks to adding to my confusion..hahahaha:).

Decisions..decisions...!!

If you want to spend a tad over $500 you can opt for a Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH, it has Wolfson DAC's for superior music reproduction and discrete amps. THX Class D Certification.

I have an Onkyo 605 and the Monitor 70s are on the way, upgrading from the RM101s which just don't have enough oomf in the front for music.

Hi, This is my first post and I am in a very similar situation as Ashish.

I am building my 1st HT system. I ordered 2 M70s and 1 CS2. I have a few questions:

1. For the rears, is M40 worth the ~$40 upgrade?

2. I picked up Onkyo HT-RC160 from Costco for $300. That says 80W/channel. Does it have enough power to drive the 2 M70, 1 CS2 and 2 M40 (if I get those instead of M30)?

3. If HT-RC160 is not good enough, is Denon AVR 1610 or Pioneer 919 a good match? I am happy with 5.1. Denon says All channels are equal power 75watts with 0.08% THD, while Pioneer says 120W, but at 1khz.

4. Also, if HT-RC160 is not good enough, can I at least use the unit that I have for testing the speakers that I will receive (tomorrow), while I take the time and decide on a good receiver? In doing so, what precaution should I exercise so that I do not damage the speakers (I read about tweeter blowing on the M70, possibly because of not enough power?)

5. The M70s are rated 2-275 W? But most receivers are only 120W? Does that mean the 120-275W "capacity" of the M70s is being never used at all?

6. I do not intend to use any pre-amp, is that okay? Will the above combination still sound good (the reviews that I read before ordering the combination did not mention any pre-amp, but now when I dig into it more, some reviewers say pre-amp, hence the confusion)? What do I lose if I do not use pre-amp with the above set up?

Welcome to Club Polk Mat, next time feel free to start your own thread as this is kinda thread jacking the OP. No harm no foul though, we were all new once too. To answer your question, yes the $40 is more than worth it IMHO for the Monitor 40's. I have them as my surrounds and they are a much better speaker than the 30's. Keep in mind though they don't have keyhole slots like the 30's for wall mounting so you will have to put them on stands or find a way to puthem on a shelf or something of the sort. The Onk you bought from Costco will work just fine, the Monitors are an 8 ohm speaker and are very easy to drive. Granted they can handle a lot more power than you will be throwing at them, but it will sound just fine. You won't be able to add an amp to your setup if you keep the Onkyo anyway as it lacks the necessary pre outs for adding said amp. I have pretty much the same speaker setup as you and I am more than pleased. Do you have a sub yet? If you will be using this for HT, you will need one. The 70's put out a decent amount of bass, but nothing like a sub would. Welcome to Club Polk, and keep us informed.

I will have to figure out a way for the M40s, then. Let me know if you recommend any good speaker stands.

I do not have a polk sub yet. It looks like the PSW10 ($92 at newegg) is not powerful enough, based on some forum reviews. I am thinking of getting started with the above setup and a 8" powered sub that came with a sony HT-7200-DH HTIB. Or, should I go for the PSW10? The PSW505 seems the matching sub, but $250 is over my current budget :-)

Honestly the 505 is probably your best option. If it is out of your budget use the one you have for now and save up. For the price, the 505 is hard to beat for a starter sub.

I am also expecting my speakers tomorrow (30th)!!

Tell us more about your devices you plan to connect and room size. Think about future also. That also dictates what receiver you get.

Well... think more like:

Tuna Fish to Caviar. Sounds like for HT, you want RTiAs.

LOL I see... I haven't auditioned the RTiA series yet... so many speaker choices out there it's hard to pick the one you really want.

Seriously. I just buy whatever seems cool off of CL, which is probably why i haven't gotten around to finishing an HT setup in years, because i always have to start over. :eek:

I havent decided on the reciever yet. I call Polk support and they said the same standard name brand recievers (onkyo, Pioneer, Yamaha, Denon etc) will go well with M70s. Only thing its that M70 can take lot of power so stay close to 100W+ rated speakers.

Based on the discussion I have had with different people in this forum, its great to get advice from everyone here, but also go to your local stores and see if you get an audio expert to guide you. Based on my research, cost depends on the feature set you want in your reciever.

Its a tough choice. I will be spending next few days doing my resrach on receivers and the deals. I will share in thsi thread if I choose.

What does reconditioned mean? is it same as refurbished? I dont have any experience with this website.

Reconditioned probably means the same as refurbished. The first batch of 806s had a minor issue with the 1080p video upscaling feature (never had an issue with mine), so quite a few of them were returned. I think they replaced the upscale chips on them and they are now considered as reconditioned. Since accessories4less is an authorized Onkyo dealer, you will get the full warranty. The Audyssey MultiEQ/calibration and THX Ultra2 certification is well worth the asking price, IMHO.

Whats the difference between x06 and x07 models? I cant seem to find one on google.

x07 is the newer line of receivers from Onkyo... They have a bit more features, but they are not THX Ultra-2, only THX Select-2 Plus certified (something to do with the amplifier section, not sure). Do some google searching on this, should provide you with more info.

I just bought the 70's and bookshelf 40's and i can say they sound realy nice. I here detail in music and movies i never heard before , No one has said anything about break in time but if you give them time to break in before you crank on them hard they will sound alot better. I could tell the difference in detail just after a few hours and now i have 50 hours on them the difference is amazing..

If you have a sub by all means us it it will help with the lows and take alot of work off the 70's until they break in.

As for the RTiA if I had the coins to drop for those ( Or the LSi) i would do it in a secound but i realy dont think you can beat the prices for the monitors and they sound real nice..

I keep stressing this on other threads...so I might as well do that on this one.... BUY USED!! So many people go out and get a new receiver when for the same amount or a lot less you can get a receiver twice as good. Right now you can get a Denon 3805 for about $400 on ebay and Amazon. The transistor, amp quality, build quality and Burr Brown DAC's etc will blow away any mentioned. The Yamaha Rx-v2500 can also be had for about the same. These receivers were 2 models under their flagships. Yes they won't have a lot of the current connections etc..BUT THERE ARE WAYS AROUND THIS. Do not be afraid of used. As long as it is a reputable seller I would buy with confidence. A good receiver will give years of service. I'm on year 9 with both of mine...both theaters are 1080p...one projector, one flat panel... hooked up with a Bluray. I say this just to show you that just because the receivers are old DOES NOT mean that you can't use current technology. To many people see an amp that can't upconvert or have HDMI and they run for the hills....
