so here we go....sony str da5400ES (plan on purchasing all ES series components) polk rti a9 @ 4 (fronts), csi a6 (center), rti a3 @ 2 (rear surrounds) and dsw pro 600 @ 2 (powered subwoofers) for my thumpers.
What i am wondering is this: to much speaker for the reciever i have or do i need to amp it up. also if i do need to amp it up what is a good / higher end 7 chammel amp. i am new to this audio stuff and really don't have a clue as to what i need to do..........any help or info wuold be greatly appreciated. not into starting over because some components and speakers are already purcahsed.

I think you need to go with a external amp. I do not think that sony is going to like a 4 ohm load. What is your left over budget from your setup? Also yes why do you have 4 fronts? you should only have 2 a center and a sub not 4 towers.HT setup

it is a 7.1 reciever, right A & B, left A & B i guess you can call the b channel speakers part of the surrounds / sides.Be good.....and if you can't be good, be great.........and if you can't be great, well,......i'll give you lessons.

Anyways... that's not correct 7.2 placement.....
You should have two fronts, a center, surround left, surround right, surround back left, surround back right, and your two subs.I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

so back to the original question, specs for the reciver says 7 X 120 per channel = 840 watts total. would adding a amp make the reciever "work" less hard. as far as the 4 ohm load goes, none of the speakers will be hooked to create a 4 ohm load.Be good.....and if you can't be good, be great.........and if you can't be great, well,......i'll give you lessons.

Yeah, adding an amp would leave less work to the receiver, as well as give more and a higher quality power to the speakers.
Is it truly 120wpc with all 7 channels driven?I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

none of the speakers you are refering to are 4 ohm, they're 8 so the sony could drive them. however using an amp for your front stage will really bring them to life and free up some juice for your surrounds.

well, manufacturer specs say 120 x 7 ,so thats what i am referencing, as i have no way of reffering to other specs. so back to the amp ?, how many channel amp would be a good choice, and which one to would be compatible with my reciever. the reciever is pushing 120 per channel now, so shouldn't that be sufficient watts. would a amp really make that much of a difference? i am a rookie to all this stuffBe good.....and if you can't be good, be great.........and if you can't be great, well,......i'll give you lessons.

it really depends on your budget. the more power you give the a9s the better they sound. If anything I would at least get a 2 channal amp for them. a 3 channal amp for the a9s and a6 would sound even better. I'm running an emotiva xpa-3 that sends 200wpc into the a9s and a6 and my surrounds are powered by the receiver. I'm pretty happy with the set up. theres lots of different amps out there, adcom, parasound, emotiva, rotel, krell and on and on. your best bet if you can is to demo a few different brands and see (hear) what sounds best to you. welcome to cp btw!
