    I don't care if you're a cop or a marine or whatever...you don't pull a gun on someone over a snowball fight.

That's a good example of letting power get to your head.

Dude got scared and was ashamed; needed to be a big man and go spread some fear himself. Dude was off duty. He wasn't investigating or called in; he was just passing by, probably about pissed in his big-man pants and wanted to make someone pay.

People like this make my throw up a little in my mouth. I understand that there are instances of reactionary judgment that are needed. You have to be quick and straight forward as an officer. I wouldn't want anyone being anything less than on their toes mentally protecting my family and community. But this is stupid. This is a grown man with a toddler's emotional state.

Desk duty? If I pulled out a gun at a snowball fight, I kind of wonder what kind of duty I would do... It's children like this, pretending to be men, like this that give police a bad wrap in many communities.

It's a poor reflection on the DC police force and he should be reprimanded as such. It's a child like reaction and that officer was trained to deal with situations like this.

In all fairness; he didn't know WTF he was walking into--could have been gang members & who knows what they might be packing. I thought gun out but down was a prudent approach tactic; he kept his weapon close to his body & non-threatening. You notice he put it back in the holster when he determined there was no threat.

I was a cop for ten years and it pisses me off when people Monday-morning-quarterback our police force's every move. DC isn't the safest place on the planet, ya know? I agree there are rogues out there, as there are in ANY workforce, but this doesn't appear to be an example of one, based on that video.

Hand on, not drawn. The behavior afterwards pretty much sews it all up. The uniformed officers seemed to have the cognicent ability to recognize the situation.

He was walking into a snowball fight. He was walking into a snowball fight with his gun drawn. He wasn't a targeted officer of some ruthless gang activity. He was off duty in his personal vehicle. He's a bully. As an officer, you know how you'd direct a civilian to react in a situation like this... Keep driving, do not confront and call the police.
And you are right; DC isn't the safest place, but that doesn't mean stop at every snowball fight and draw your weapon... Pointed down or out or anywhere. Personally, I don't think he's 'rogue'... I think he's a dumb **** child with a gun and a poor sense of how to handle himself.
This isn't a critique on how an officer should handle themselves. This is just common sense for common man. The fact that he is an officer is appalling, but shouldn't reflect on the entire force. The problem is, whether he meant it to or not, it does in many peoples' minds, reflect on the entire force.

I have a lot of respect for the police; have a few in the family. I know they are human like anyone else. But if a common man with a license to carry popped out of his SUV with his gun drawn, it would be a crime. The fact that it was an officer who is trained on how to command respect without having to draw a gun is more of a crime.

It could have been handled differently, but so could nearly any situation. That's why there's this thing called discretion to LEOs are given. I'm not sure that he broke any laws himself, did he?

It seems more of a reason for the general public to whine about cops, which is all too often these days. Try saving it for the truly outrageous stuff that happens involving LEOs.

Alright, so this has obviously been a bother to me.
The idea that an officer is shown on a video, gun drawn, at a snowball fight.
And I've voiced rather strong opinion on it.

I'd rather not have a full reversal, as admitting wrong on the internet is about as stupid as voicing an opinion at all...

But I watched with sound... noting first that the video doesn't start with the snowball hitting the windshild, but rather after the gun is drawn. So we don't know a lot about what is going on from the get-go.

Also, the news clips don't show that he has been hit several times, hard enough to drop his radio (where he called for help). And that the crowd had begun to get more than rowdy, but down right mean. At the point where they begin throwing snowballs after they know he's an officer and has his gun drawn, they are in violation of the law. Battery is battery regardless of intent or material (snowball, beer can, etc.).

Why he stopped, we don't know; he says at one point that it was his vehicle being hit. I guess if he thought there could be damage (and rightfully so), then a crime against property could have happened and he had a perfectly reasonable idea to stop.

With sound and seeing the way that this man was treated, I'm really going to have to reverse my opinion all the way. Seems he did things by the book...

Even though this video is heavily slanted against him, I think it speaks volumes against the mob that he was standing against (most of the time without weapon drawn).

Sorry for jumping the gun guys... this was reported all kinds of wrong...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sFC8mNdxV0c

And here is about what the scene looked like (not sure if it's the same intersection?) with 200 people.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTx2w0WjYIk&feature=player_embedded#at=99

And a litt wikipedia about that intersection:

"A former silent movie house on U Street has been the home of Ben's Chili Bowl since its establishment in 1958.While the area remained a cultural center for the African American community through the 1960s, the neighborhood began to decline following the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. The intersection of 14th Street and U Street was the epicenter of violence and destruction during the 1968 Washington, D.C. riots. Following the riots, and the subsequent flight of affluent residents and businesses from the area, the corridor became blighted. Drug trafficking rose dramatically in the mid-1960s, and for many years the intersection of 14th and U Streets was the center of drug trafficking in Washington, D.C. At times, hundreds of addicts would fill the streets in a carnival-like atmosphere, waiting for drug shipments to arrive."
