My DSW microPro 4000 likes to move?!?

Hi,

Just a sanity check. I've noticed that when I play movies with very strong (for lack of proper terminology) bass (in my case Cloverfield Blu-ray and War of the Worlds DVD) my bass sometimes starts to literally jump causing a terrible sound.

Of course, the first gut feeling is to lower the bass, but come on, shouldn't a bass be designed so that it can't lift it's own weight?

I have my 4000 standing in a corner (because of the rooms layout) on rubber feet on my hardwood floor.

I want to watch my movies with high volume (not THAT high though) and it really sucks that my bass limits my volume.

Is it defective or is this just by design.

I have never had this problem, but then again I have a less powerful sub and carpet in my living room. As much as you may hate to, for the sake of troubleshooting atleast, lower down the sub a bit and see if it still takes a walk on you. If not, then you know your problem, if it does look into the rubber on the feet, it may not be getting the job done. That is about all I got, somebody else may have a better idea.

Well, yes. If I lower the master volume on my receiver then the problem goes away. But it's not THAT high to begin with, sure, my fiance considers it high but still not extremely high, just a little higher than what most people would consider normal listening levels.

And what really befuddles me is this: Even if I crank everything to the max, should the bass really start jumping around?

It hops because of the square passive radiator on the bottom. Adding weight to the top of the sub helps. You could also try adding a piece of carpet under the sub.

    +1,

That is a nice sub, but with a 12x12" radiator underneath it you're pushing a lot of air between it and the floor which is not far below it. Though the sub is not LIGHT it is not as heavy as other subs in that class and as a result it can move around...carpeting might help or a rubberized sub-caddy. My sub is only a 300 watter (600w peak) and about 8 pounds lighter but its on a carpet with a half-inch carpet pad under it...and it doesn't move an inch even when overdriven.

Good suggestions guys and good link DMara. Seems at least I'm not the only one with this problem.

DMara, you and I have very similar systems. :) I've just exchanged your receiver for a Sony STR-DA2400ES and the DVD for a Sony DVD- and HDD-recorder.

And I live in Sweden, took me 2 months to ship the Emo by boat ;)
