Does anyone have any great yellow jacket trap ideas or products? We had a mild winter in north Idaho, and they're already starting to creep out of the woodwork. We have a 3 month old, and I'd like to spend some safer time on the deck. They've been so bad some years it's hard to go outside.

The normal traps just aren't cutting it. I was curious if something like this would work.... Ultrasonic Pest Repeller.

Can you locate the nest? I had the same problem last year. There were millions of them coming out from under some old RR ties that were used for landscaping in my back yard. I had a pest guy spray all over / under it. A few days later when the activity was minimal, I rolled the timber over only to find that they had completely hollowed out the inside and there was an external hive the size of a basketball. Make sure you have some spray with a long stream hand to get any leftovers. Haven't had any problems ever since. Good luck!

I work in the field for Sprint, and come across wasps, yellow jackets and hornets all the freakin' time. I am not a fan, and allergic, so it is not a perk of my job. I havn't been stung in 10 years. Thats just vigilance, not because of what follows.

I have a spray that is the shiznit, instant knockdown, and you can roll up on a nest the size of your head and have no fear. It is also residual, so they know its there for about 6-12 hours, then it fades. They usually do not come back. Its a commericial brand, I will get the name tomorrow and post it.

Only drawback of this stuff is that it gets used quick. In that I mean it exits the canister in a very fast fashion, so 1 can won't do your job. But it is super powerfull.

Some preventative measures are to clog or seal any holes that are around your structure. Eaves, pipes, and shutters on a home are the worst offenders. I have a carpenter bee problem also, and the sealing of my eaves with silicon, and my semi-daily tennis racket day of bee swatting has worked wonders.

Good luck and let me know if things have worked out. I have some other goodies/ideas in my bag of "Hey I don't wanna' get stung." bag.

Have you tried tacking a piece of cedar near the area that the wasps use as a nest? I know it works for repelling ants, termites, & moths. I've heard most, if not all insects can't stand the stuff. If it works it would be better than spraying a bunch of chemicals with a baby in the house.

Thanks for the ideas... the industrial strength spray sounds good. Part of the problem is I live on the edge of a meadow, and it's hard to pin down where they're coming from (basically everywhere). I learned a lesson about using silicone... the last few weeks I've been replacing some windows and trim on the house, and found they were squeezing behind the old trim and building nests.

I have this thing against wasps from an early age... let's just say the story revolves around me as an 8 year old in the trees, pissing on an old innocent looking rotted stump, turned out to have a nest in it, and the PO'd wasps heading straight towards the, um, source... was stung many, many times.

Are you with FON or the PCS Group? I'm with a PCS affiliate now and worked for PCS in the North East from the very beginning.

HBomb - Yea I also have been here from the beginnning, 7 years. I was with Sprint PCS before they called it Sprint PCS,

The first company was APC, then Sprint Spectrum, then Sprint decided to formally eat us, and we became the first PCS network in the nation. DC/ Baltimore MTA. It was weird, Sprint was funding us the whole time, but in case it failed in America, they didn't want to be associated. Little did they know.............. :)

I love a good wasp battle. First of all, EVERY inch of skin covered, sweatpants OVER jeans, tucked into combat boots. 3 layers up top, Jean jacket last. Ball-cap, safety goggles, and a towel or bandana covering neck, mouth, and nose. Leather work gloves.

Toolbelt around waist, with a spare can of raid hornet spray in the hammer-holder for a quick re-load. 1 can in each hand.

Stir them puppies up, kick it, flip it, whatever, then start spraying like a madman. I'm talking jumps, rolls, like you are Ethan Hunt in Mission Impossible. Pretend those can's are DE's, and your packing an extra clip in the belt.

Fun stuff, freaks the neighbors out a little.

Fireants, I just pour unleaded on the top of the mound - gone. Effective, but not much fun.

    Cheers,
    Russ

    hey dylan.

bees are a pain int he butt. i had a problem as well last year (probably due to the mild winter) and had no luck getting rid of them. this year i am going to act early and just spray the crap out of every nest and bee i see before the spring is up (had at least 6 nests around the house last year and didn't spray till late). most of the sprays seem to kill them pretty well, and at $3 to $4 a can at the home depot, i keep a couple on hand now.

although, in general bees don't bother you. it's when your bother their home that they get mean (as you would if someone bothered yours). if you keep away from bright clothes and strong smells (dress the baby in a dull outfit when outside and through away those empty beers) they shouldn't come near you. if they are hanging around, and there is no nest near, then they are just looking for food. knowledge is your best defense (i stepped on a hornets nest and got stung about 7 times. the more i learned about bees, the less fearful i was). I found a couple of sites about bees. maybe they'll help (or you can dig a little deeper on the net and find something more). i'm sure there are plenty of bee fans out there willing to give more human ways to keep bees away.
