I have the X1-series Panasonic, and am quite pleased. The only downside for me is no analog audio out... other than that a great TV at a great price!

In general, Panasonic is known more for their plasma quality than Samsung.

I too have a panny x-series and was also surprised that the only audio out was optical - not that I use it - but I thought it was a weird/expensive connection to spec and leave out the L/R analog connection....

My 2 yr old sammy does run hot but I think samsungs have gotten cooler running.

I feel panasonic has steped up and either choice will be fine. Just look close at the extra features and get one. Either way ,you'll be happy I'm sure.Better than a comparably sized LCD too. Alot cheaper also.

Now the LED back-lit LCDs from samsung look great but $$ Is required.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I have that Panny in our workout/Wii room, I haven't compared it with the Samsung, but I like it very much.

I did compare it with a few 1080p lcd's and I liked the pic better. I also know a couple of other's that bought it because of the same reason. IMHO the blacks are very good on that set.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

think i have narrowed it down to two panasonic plasmas, the tc-42px14 ($548) and tc-42px1 ($599). question is the x1 worth the $51 difference?
    1. can get the x14 18 month no interest.
    2. x14 3 yr. extended $79.96 x1 5 yr. extended $200
    3. native contrast ratio x14 15,000:1 x1 30,000:1
    4. shades of graduation x14 4096 x1 5120
    5. sub pixel control x14 yes x1 no
just about everything else equal, both are 2009 models.

My new Samsung PNB550 does not run hot at all. If you put your hand over the top of it you feel some heat but nothing like the older models.

Get the PNB550 series, they're Samsung's biggest bang for the buck plasma. Other than Samsung, go with Pioneer or Panasonic G or S1 series.

Yeah the new Sammys don't run hot and they have great picture quality. we've got a 50" upstairs and a 42" down and they run fairly cool with great PQ, that being said I don't think you could go wrong with either Samsung or Panasonic.

I'm also shopping for a "Panny", found the site linked below among others, and have decided to go with a 50" G10 series. Best buy has a 50" 1080P U1 series for $899 online with an in-store pick up option. Ive read some bad reviews on the 720P X1 & X14 lines, not sure about Samsungs but they might be a better bet than either of the X1 orX14 models. I suggest doing a LOT of research before pulling that trigger!;)

HHgregg has the Samsung PN50B550 model for $989. Plus, I'm sure you could work them down another $100.

For a screen size range between 40"-50", 1080p/720p is not much of an issue with the difference fairly negligible except for the blu ray capability I think. The Panasonic VIERA TC-P42X1 42" Plasma TV, for example, has a very high LCD TV ratings of 86 but is priced for about $577 only while its Panasonic VIERA TC-P50X1 50" Plasma TV big brother has a market price of only around $712! Well, that's a lot of savings right there if I might say!
