Maybe if you consider Olive Garden an Italian joint. Friggin Americans only know Italian food by chain places, not the real deal. Do you want to know why some Italians think they are special ? Aside from their vast history, they have learned to live the lifestyle we only dream about and still have modern conveniences. With all our wealth and knowledge,we still can't duplicate what they have. They Look at america as nothing special. What do we have that they don't ? Disneyland? Subway sandwiches? Skyscrapers? American Idol?

You can stick me on the beach at Portofino,or Capri,or in Tuscany, enjoying homemade food, wine and cheeses, and I'd be a happy camper the rest of my life.

Every ethnic food we have here is built on imitations...you have to experience the real deal,in any culture,to form an honest opinion. Second to Italian food is Mexican, for me anyway. Real mexican, not this Taco Bell crap.

Italian food is easy, and can be very good if done properly. The problem is usually the Americanized-Italians cooking it. . . they all think they can cook, but frankly, most are awful. That is why, although my upcoming wedding is going to be held in the North End, which is the Little Italy of Boston, the Chef, who also happens to be the new father in-law, is from Thailand. :D His prior Gig was the exec-chef for Locke-Ober, if any are familiar, he may have cooked for you.
On the discrimination thing, well, in Boston which was a major port for both, it was pretty hard for both. The Italians stuck together, the Irish fought each other, but flooded the police dept, and the public offices. You can see the remnants of entire neighborhoods that have been Italian, Irish, or mixed, that are now turning into condos for yuppies, or 'triple deckahs' selling to the new guard of immigrants. They have been like that for a hundred plus years, and it's all-a-changing. Round here, Irish guys married Ital Girls, and vice versa. Family dinners are a crapshoot at best.

I dated an Italian girl once. She had a nice tan, but I couldn't stand the temper that came along with she and her family. They'd yell and fight about everything. And, somehow it always involved a wooden spoon with meat sauce being spattered all over.

I can attest to the temper.....first hand. That's a hard one to reign in when it's in your blood.
