Saw this on the yahoo homepage. Bleh

Its a real shame to see wii sports and fit on the list. Yes, they are one of the best selling games ever, but one comes with every system and the other isn't even a game...Are people really that dumb to think they are working out. Its like a cop out for fat people so they don't have to get serious into exercising.

But at least it didn't forget a few of my favs including HL2, halo, and GTA3 (though their position on the list is another matter)

Nice comments, dude. I know a few older folks in particular who sometimes use the Nintendo Wii for exercise, including my mom who is 67 years old and in great shape. The exercise they get from it is pretty decent depending on what they put into it and then there's the added fun factor.

Any time you're accelerating your heart rate by moving around you're burning calories and you are getting exercise. I'm willing to bet you haven't spent any time doing this yourself using the Wii.

I find that people who make comments like the above comment are usually hard core gamers that couldn't figure out why the Wii outsells their beloved system or why a wii game outsells the newest hard-core game they love. Perhaps that's the case. I didn't see one game that was strictly for PS3 or XBox 360. Lots of PC, PS2, Wii, and I believe it was one that was PC/XBox360/PS3.

K maybe I was a little harshing saying fat people use this and I'm sorry for that. But yes I have tried it, and most of it was normal exercises dumbed down so the wii board and remote can be used. Like running.... there is a reason why there are treadmills. Running is ten times harder then running in place. Even though my heart rate did go up somewhat during this , if I really would have ran as far as it told me, I would have been sweating my **** off.

But maybe I have an extreme biased towards this game since the two people I know who try to use it are obese and they try to use as a substitute for real exercise. For people to lose the weight they have to have the drive to push them. If they can't do it going to the gym or exercising outside, some video game that costs 90 dollars isn't going to give that motivation either. In fact, it only hinders them. But for others (like your mom;)), I guess it can put into good use.

I'm not an xbox or ps3 fanboy. I always loved nintendo games, in fact I still have my gamecube and n64 hooked up and play it regularly. But to say wii sports is the best game of the decade is utterly ridiculous. Games like baseball and tennis (though somewhat fun) have to be "dumbed down" just so the wii controls work. The only game with any sort of depth is bowling, but that won't save that this is only a techincal demo. With developers working so hard to make great games this decade, its a shame this game took a spot from them. But its not my list, so I guess it doesn't matter much

This will be my last reply about using the Wii for exercise as it was my interjection that took this off topic... :)

It is real exercise if they choose to put any effort into it, especially if they are obese, as you say. In fact, something like the Wii is an infinitely better idea than flopping around trying to run when your body isn't used to such a strenuous activity. Running is for people who are already in relatively good shape, so for your two friends, that probably wasn't a valid option. Yes "running" on the Wii isn't the same as running outside, just as my stationary bike doesn't offer near the workout my mountain bike does.

Regardless of the activity, the only way you're going to get anything out of it is if you put effort in. You seem upset/bewildered that the Wii is used by people to exercise. It's a great option for people who are motivated. Yeah, if you're in great shape it's probably not going to do much. You need to run a couple miles to get the same benefit as the overweight person does out of throwing haymakers in his living room for a half hour in Wii Boxing.

I don't use it to exercise, but having played some of the more "active" games for Wii with friends and family I was definitely working up a decent sweat after a half hour or so.

The bottom line is you can definitely lose weight using the Wii. All that's necessary is a person who is motivated to be active. Like a stationary bike or a treadmill it doesn't do anyone any good unless they're using it.

Quake 3 Arena came out Dec '99 so technically, not a candidate. But definitely my favorite with UT a close second. HL2 was ok and TF was good too.

    Fallout 3
    COD world at war
    Oblivion
Half life 2 (with extra episodes)
    Bioshock

I would love to include some Resident Evil game in there, but the latest games just are so different from the originals. True survival horror. I miss that creepy haunted mansion feeling.

I played fallout 1 and 2, and while 3 is way different in gameplay, it's due to the evolution of gaming. I think it might just be the best game of the decade. That said, my fav game title of all time is Doom!

I played Doom3 on the Xbox, and Doom on the Nitendo 64, and the Nitendo version was much better, IMO, than Doom 3. Probably because it was my first experience with Doom, and I did not know what to expect. I still get chills when I think of some of the levels. Great game.
