When I owned them, I liked them off. Both my wife and I noticed a very slight difference in the higher frequency range. Plus they just look better too!

Keep in mind my pair had the stock cloth, some people go for a more 'transparent' material.

He asked about the speakers themselves with or without grills, not whether or not you have anything on. TMI imo...

Errr.... the speakers. Not me, necessarily. Not always possible for me to leave the grills off... the cats like to get into the speakers. Would rather they tear up a grill than a cone.

    That's not gone well....

I normally listen to mine with the grills on, but I can definately tell the difference in sound if I take them off.

Which one sounds better is really up to you, and probably depends a lot on the characteristics of your entire system.

With the SL2000s I did not notice any difference. With the RD 194s I thought they sounded better with them off. I changed out the heavy grill cloth for lighter material and now they sound the same with grills on or off.
