**** happens. Sorry to see of everyone's difficulties over the holiday. Sucks when they occur on a normal day, compounds when it's on a holiday.:( Hope everyone can some how find a way to laugh these off soon and were still able to see the things they do have to be thankful for.

Jstas glad you were able to save your gear.

Oh, yeah, the gear. THAT'S what's important.

I lost everything. Year books from schools, photo albums, stacks and stacks of books, furniture, computer equipment...you name it, it's gone.

Pycroft, you still haven't said anything more than you had a bad holiday. Why was your holiday so bad?

The real bummer, as you pointed out, is the irreplaceable stuff. The gear can be replaced. Sorry to hear about that Jstas.

Sorry again for your troubles, and yes it sucks, but it is history. It could have been worse. You could have received this news while you were in the hospital yourself or there for a loved one. I was trying to help you look on the bright side regardless of how small of a comfort that was.

I seem to remember another thread you did not like comments on the vulneralbility of basements to water damage. Understand two totally different circumstances, but you ask for comments, then reply to those you don't care for with sacasm  I don't get it:confused: Anyhow hope maybe your homeowners ins., or local sewer authority can help offset the financial loss.

Also, the basement problem wasn't over flooding. The water damage is from mold and rot due to moisture problems caused by rain run-off from the ground around the house being pitched towards the foundation. Water was leeching in to the basement because the drainge was running right along the foundation. I spent 3 weekends wrestling with ground tillers and ripping out stumps, roots and rock and regrading. Stop over-analyzing my situation. Besides, I said I fixed it so it's not a concern anymore, it shouldn't even factor in to any recommendation. On top of that, if water really was a concern, I would not be considering putting any high dollar audio or video equipment in that room until it was fixed. Give me some credit here, folks.
    .

This made me think your financial losses could have been much higher.

Kevin - sounds like a Christmas at my house 6 years ago. Oldest daughter (step childern) got in a big blowout with the wife over her childhood. Words were said and daughter left in a huff and hasn't talked to her mother since. All the other kids and grandchildern are fine, just the oldest.

Seriously? I was in basic training in San Antonio when you were born, but thanks for the compliment. Maybe when you've been around a little longer you will look at things a little different.

    Have a good day.

Don't worry, he probably has you mixed up with appvd, who is a college kid. There are some funny stories out there, but it always sucks to lose personal items due to things completely out of your control.

You're a grown man, seeing another grown man write about a devastating catastrophe in his life and all you have to say is that at least the gear was saved. Yeah, I know 50 year old men who are still "kids". You're priorities are screwed up. To hell with the gear. The only bonus is that I'll probably sell the gear to pay for whatever needs to be replaced that any insurance claim I might be able to file won't cover. And your marginalization of my catastrophe with the statement that "it could be worse" is offensive. I've lost many irreplaceable things as well as all nostalgic records of my life and items of great sentimental value passed on to me by family members that have passed on themselves. On top of that, the house I just bought is now a biohazard that is going to need a professional cleaning service to come in and gut the basement to clean it up. But thank the good Lord, the gear was saved! Hallelujah! Even Tom, the King of Tactless didn't go so far as to kick someone when they are down.

You should be glad all I did was to tell you to shut up and call you a kid. I have alot more to say but I'm biting my tongue so I don't have to hear the crybabies whine about how insensitive I am.

Well this is how mine went.... as some of you know I have had my share of problems in the past couple months starting with the wife moving out saying that we needed some time apart to work on things then just having back surgery last tuesday. Well the wife and I have been talking quite a bit and I thought that we were starting to get things worked out. Well since I had surgery on Tuesday I really didnt think that I should go anywhere on Thursday I thought that I should give myself a couple of days before going anywhere. So I asked the wife what she was going to do on Thanksgiving and she said that since I was not going to be able to do anything she would wait until Saturday and I should be feeling better by then and would be able to come over and have dinner with her and the kids. So I thought that we would be able to spend some time together on thursday since she wasn't cooking or anything like that and the kids were going to go to their dads for thanksgiving(yes they are not mine they are my stepkids). So when I tried to call the mrs to see if she was coming over she said that she was busy cooking dinner and that she would bring me a plate later if it wasn't too late. Well so much for having dinner with the family. So I spent thanksgiving all buy myself laying in bed and no one thought anything of it. I know its just a day of the year but with everything going on i just really could have used some family time you know. So thats how my thanksgiving went.

    Jstas,
Sorry to hear of your losses. I've heard of a back-flow preventer that can be installed in your main line. I hope it does'nt happen again before you get one installed.Best wishes to you with the clean -up process.
