How many times do you have to buy a PS3?

Whats up all?

This sucks man. For no damn reason my PS3 is broken. All of a sudden there is no power going to the console. No standby light when the unit is plugged in. I figured that since the PS3 is superior to the 360 in terms of failure rate, I would be covered by the warranty. Not so. It only has a one year warranty. Whats up with that? Sony sucks. Looks like I am either going to have to try to get it repaired or buy another one.

Lame.

what's that make me mac? i built my own pc, yet i play on my consoles.;)

sorry to hear about your ps3. i wonder if you are able to try switching out the internal power supply. i THINK sony charges $150 to do most repairs? the new slims can be had for a deal if you search. but i think you feel the same as me, you don't want to "invest" more of your money into the product that just failed you.

i know the xbox's have the red rings of death. but at least ms finally has been forced into a three year warranty to cover that issue. fat chance ever seeing sony follow suit...

    +1 centillion!

Not to say I didn't own any. Bought the PS3 when it first came out but I sold it about 2-3yrs later. The owner now still plays it so I'd say you were just in that 5% failure rate bracket for hardware.

Maybe real men don't play consoles but Xbox and Sony sure SELL a lot of them to the 18-30 some set...? And the multi-billion dollar game industry, I would imagine is really not producing for PC builders? The few of them out there! They'd go broke if they did that....that's not to say that playing games on a powerful PC doesn't make one swoon more....I wouldn't know because I don't use my PS3 as a gaming tool....my 12 year old daughter does that...and she's abused it enough for it to not fail since I bought it? Me, I just stream music and blu-ray it. Old farts don't build PCs either...no time, no interest.

I gotta agree with this. If you play games , use other features then just the Blu Ray then yeah get a new one or repair it, if not then I'd start looking at stand alone Blu ray players. They have got so much better faster and now have netflix and other streaming abilities.

I will be replacing my Ps3 with a Stand alone in the very near future.

I don't have a ps3 I use to have a 360 but got rid of it because I did not play it that much. I do build computers and usually use them more than consoles. The only reason i even had a counsels was for racing games.

Ive had my 360 for about 3 years, been repaired once 2 years ago, no problems since, gets played everyday. What is strange is, the first year I had the XBOX I had it sitting upright with the cooling adapter under the base and it crapped out. After it was repaired I spoke with a Microsoft rep and he told me to lay it flat, no extra cooling necessary, its been working for 2 years with constant play.

    Once my balls.

I'm on my third 360. This will make PS3 #2. Considering how little use the PS3 gets compared to the 360 its easily now the least reliable. I punish my 360. The PS3 gets the occasional game and a couple BluRays a week.

...and I am happy to say that I STILL don't have the urge nor desire to own a PS3 after all these years...:p

I have PS1 and PS2, so 360 and Wii are the two consoles that get airtime around here.
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

There is a class action lawsuit against Sony contending that the firmware update kills the blu-ray player.

    http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2009/10/sony-sued-over-ps3-update-that-supposedly-bricks-consoles.ars

IMO, this happened to those of us with the 60GB version a few years back but nobody believed us. The last update in Sept, v3.0, bricked the 40GB (this is from following PS3 threads elsewhere) and some 60GB. I haven't seen a bricked 80GB yet. Sony released a newer firmware, v3.01, which is supposed to be the last update for this year. I've been holding off on the $150 repair job because I expected more bricked PS3 and the eventual lawsuit. Of course, it may take until 2015 before judgment or settlement but I'm hoping they'll merely do a firmware fix or copy MS and extend the warranty period.

With BR players going for under $100 and competing consoles at $199, I'm hoping there's enough bad press to force Sony to fix the problem.

I am technically on my second unit. The first unit was returned to the store because the fans were on full throttle.

Is it really $150 across the board to get anything repaired on a PS3?

I've got a 60GB model, and just disassembled it for a good cleaning. Everything inside there is modular, and easy to replace. If you can get a new power supply, it's an EASY swap. There are a ton of picture/video guides on the internet for the how-to.

This was the first site I found for parts. Looks like it's about $30.

It's about $175 after it's all said and done. Had to refurb my son's a year or so ago. My other son broke his too and that one is in the closet collecting dust until I can get it fixed. They used them constantly about 6-8 hours a day atleast during the week and 10+ hours a day on the weekends, so no wonder they broke them. I have had my original 80GB for years now and not a single problem (knocks on wood) Sony will try to fix the original unit you send them, but if they can't they send you a factory refurbished unit for around $175. I love my PS3, and still consider it one of the best parts of my humble HT.
