Sony needs a firmware update for the PS3 for CD playback

With the PS3 wired into my Onkyo via HDMI I am unable to play a CD unless I turn the display on. Being that I have a FP I'm not going to do this just to make the connection so the CD will play.

Come on Sony, it cannot be too difficult.

Have you tried: System Settings>Disc Auto-Start?

I'm pretty sure the Sony will output the audio if it is configured properly even if the monitor is not on. I can't check because I'm 12K miles away from my unit at the moment but run through the menus suggested above..

Even cheap Sony upconverting DVD changers can do what you're asking....I know, I used to own one that I used briefly to play CDs in the basement...

I did set it to auto start when I first bought the player, but I will double check it next time I fire the rig up to make sure it's still set to that. But, I don't remember that fixing the problem.

I've never been able to play a CD without having to turn the FP on first.

Eventually. Just don't want to spend the money right now and the longer I wait, the less expensive the players will get.

Mine plays CD's without the screen on, but I do not use an HDMI receiver.
    That is interesting.

Same here, I use Toslink for audio and HDMI for video (I don't have an HDMI AVR yet)

    It's only with HDMI.

It may not be ideal, but can you not connect a Toslink or stereo to the receiver for music?

I have my ps3 hooked up to my receiver via hdmi and it plays cd's with my monitor off. So it will work just got to figure out how.

I could, but I shouldn't have to. The entire point behind HDMI is audio and video all in one cable.

Same here. PS3 -> HDMI -> Onkyo. The TV does not have to be on.

I even have my Onkyo receiver setup as a "second monitor" to get sound via HDMI from my computer without having the TV on. (My Onkyo only has 1 HDMI out).
    Onkyo TX-SR806 - Receiver.
    RTi A9 - Fronts.
    CSi5 - Center.
    RTi A3 - Surrounds.
    DSW microPRO 4000 - Subwoofer.

Check all your chain settings and turn off all HDMI control. This should do it.

it's not the PS3... It's the receiver... HDMI receivers have a config where you can have the HDMI signal pass thru or require a monitor. can't remember exactly where but most receivers have this option and you have to disable or enable it.

Mine also works without the TV on. When I turn off the TV my receiver stops sending the signal for a few seconds but then it comes back and works fine.
