I use spell check 99% of the time I post here. My spelling sucks as does my typing skills.
The other thing is I don't want the guys around here to think I'm a dumb ****.

I saw this years ago, and it is pretty funny how your mind automatically recognizes the words.

I think TNRabbit hit it though.

Literacy is a prerequisite. Either way, I write in english. That means there is a definite order in which the letters are supposed to appear. We have dictionaries to aid in the process of deciphering that order. And spell checkers for those of us that suck at it.

Think of it this way, If I didn't know the language, and tried to decipher the above post with aid of an english dictionary, I would be completely unsuccessful. Communication would fail miserably.

I think the fact that the brain can reconstruct the word even with the letters out of order is a fascinating point though.

Charlie Rose is doing a series on the brain right now. Exactly this sort of thing is subject of a round table discussion from many different points of view. Good stuff.

I honestly thought it was higher, and I have never heard the number 55% thrown out there before. We had a teacher in high school give this to us so that was like what 6 years ago or so for me. I think almost everyone in the room could read it except a few, but it was greater than 55%. It is cool how the brain works with this. Now try it upside down spelled like that, that should make things fun.

The brain doesn't seem to do so well with inversion or upside down.

It's not about reading letters and order. It's about recognizing patterns. When you read, you're brain processes the visual pattern of the word long before it processes any letter. If you look at the words, the patterns are pretty close to what they would normally be. Therefore, your brain error corrects in a sense and fills in the missing links.

I must be a freak then because I can read backwards and upside down. However, reverse printing like the word Ambulance on the front of Ambulances is written so that it looks correct in your rearview mirror. Looking at that straight on is difficult to read. Anything else is a cinch.

I was referring to some facial recognition studies. Perhaps written language is processed in a different way. I struggle with upside down/backwards for some reason.

A lot more is conveyed with how you write than just the basic meaning. Sure this shows that for basic reading comprehension spelling is not all that important (although being able to parse the misspellings probably requires that you can read and associate those words WITH the correct spellings in your mind), but if you have constant spelling and grammar mistakes in real life, no matter how much you want to deny it, it says something about you to the people reading. A lot of the folks here, who are probably very smart in real life but who write like morons (spelling, grammar, punctuation, pick one), I have a hard time taking seriously.

See I can do that, but honestly I'm horrible at basic spelling. I failed it constantly when I was younger, yet I had a very high reading comprehension when I was younger. I don't get it.

I am totally with you on this one. I struggle with spelling too, that's why I use a spell check. But some of the gibberish that passes for a post on this (and every other forum) is telling and causes me to have the same reaction. Dismissal. And it's unfortunate for me, as I would very much like to understand what they are posting.
