Whats up all?
A friend of mine just got a brand new mac mini. He was currently using a Vista laptop. He is having problems moving his files to the new mac. Whats going on is he doesn't see it in the Sharing tab on any mac window including finder , iphoto , Itunes etc.

Anyone have any tips? I transferred years ago from XP and it was a breeze. I saw the XP laptop in the sharing tab and away I went.

Thanks in advance,

Dan

Is he using an external hard drive to move the media? If it is NTFS it would not be recognized.

If he is doing it over the network, then I would not be able to help because I have never tried. The folder on his end of the Vista laptop is set to shared right?

Mac will not see shared folders on vista but will XP. You have to manually connect to the vista pc by putting in the IP address.

NTFS is not the problem I have an external drive formatted NTFS and the mac can read it just fine its a problem with vista try this

1.With the Finder active, from the Go menu, select Connect to Server... . Alternatively, with the Finder active, press Cmd-k .

2.In the Connect to Server window that opens, next to the "Address:" field, type the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) or IP address of the vista pc (e.g., idisk.mac.com). Click Connect.

3.In the authentication window that appears, type your username and password for the vista pc.

Also, on the Vista machine, you have to ensure that File sharing is enabled and also that the firewall is not blocking any of the traffic.
An actual folder doesn't necessarily have to be shared as you can access the root of the hard drive by mapping to the drive letter and a $ (i.e. \\vistacomputername\c$) as long as you authenticate with an account that had admin rights this should work.
Or you could just ensure that the root of C: is shared.

If you have another XP or Vista machine hady see if you can connect to the Visat box that way first to ensure that remote networking is setup correctly at all.

If the Vista box has any other firewall type software such as McAfee, Symantec, ZoneAlarm, etc, just disable it, do the transfer and then reenable it.

On the Vista machine press F1, Search for File Sharing and you'll have a ton of things to look at that may help resolve the issue, such as File sharing essentials, etc.

Alternatively, you can try to see if you can access the Mac from the Vista box, and if so just push the files that way.

never have used vista so i'm speaking out of turn
