OK, so I'm seeing quite a bit of "karma" thread thrown around. Someone care to explain how it works and what it means? Thanks in advance!

If you have something you want to pass on to another member, you create a karma thread and give it to someone. :)

Karma is basically a fun way of giving something away to someone else in the community, and hopefully in time those things would continue to get passed around and kept within the community so everyone can experience it.

You can pretty much do whatever you want with it, as long as it's free to the recipient. Selling something really cheap is still selling something, and making the recipient pay for shipping kinda blows the concept.

It usually involves a drawing. People who would like the item say they're in or do whatever it is you determine should be done to be "in" for the drawing. For the sake of fairness I've always done numbers, and picked out of a hat or used a computer program to randomly pick the recipient.

It can be wide open, or you can restrict it to people with a certain number of posts, or number of years on the forum, or you can ask who was on page 29 of the March 1982 issue of Rolling Stone and give the winner the item. The rules are up to you, but overall it's just a fun way to pass things on and maintain a sense of community.

Speaking of, I have a few things I need to offer up. Thanks for the reminder. ;)

Smart offerers of karma usually set a minimum post limit before people can become eligible. It helps to keep out the opportunists and riff-raff. I see you just joined this week.

Seems the bigger the karma, the longer the membership or bigger the post-count too. Makes sense, though. No matter the intentions of a new member, a tried and true member of a community deserves more of a chance, IMHO.

The whole karma thing on this forum is awesome...I've never seen anything like it on another message board. It's true to it's name though...I've offered up a few karmas in the past, and I've been the lucky winner of several really cool karmas. That's the Karma at work.:)

I've got a few things put aside that are going up for Karma pretty soon...I'm just waiting until we get a little closer to Christmas.:)

Soooo...is there a grace period one would have to wait before posting a karma thread? For example, would it be odd or frowned upon if say, I were to do it....and then no one goes in on it and then it's like I end up being the last person picked to play kick-ball, which might explain my fear of rejection and abandonment...and then I go home and yell at the wife, the wife yells at the kids, the kids kick the dog and then the dog chews up my favorite issue of cigar aficionado and all along I just want to hit someone up with swag....daaaaamit, why God, whyyyyyyyyy?

Yeah, I don't think there is any chance of any domestic violence occurring. At least not on your end, since you will be the one getting rid of something.;)

    Here's how it really works:

    1) You give me stuff.
    2) I post a message saying what a great guy you are.
    3) I keep the stuff, you get nothing.
    4) That's it.

More seriously, it would be considered rude to include yourself in an existing karma just a few days and/or posts after joining, but there's nothing rude about offering a karma of your own, for others to win, as soon as you join. Just use common sense (which means, don't post a karma that says "I'm new here, but if you send my $40 for shipping, the winner can have my **** for free").

Welcome to the forum, and get yourself some protective gear (including a helmet and bullet proof vest) to wear AT ALL TIMES while posting in Club Polk: you're gonna need it in here!
    Alea jacta est!
