Hi Everyone,
Well i am using the Dell Inspiron 1150 PC that runs Windows XP has suddenly stopped recognized DVDs, but, for some reason CDs are still working. Dell's support suggested that it was a corrupt DVD decoder and that I should perform a system recovery that involves restoring the computer to the state it was . I am not keen on doing that because I would lose all of my customised settings and it would take me a long time to download and reinstall all of the security updates, the applications that I installed myself, and all of my data files that I have backups of. So please give idea regarding that i dont want lose my setting from the DVD.

I'm no PC wizard but there are some guys here that are very knowledgeable, and some I think are IT pros. But with my knowledge I think the Dell techs are telling you to use the system restore feature. It sounds more like a driver problem to me, so you might want to check there first.
Are you sure it is all DVDs? Are you having problems with a known good retail DVD? Did you recently install any new software?
Do you feel comfortable understanding what you see if you go to the "Device Manager"?
The System Restore will not touch your data files. The only apps you need to worry about would be ones installed after the restore point. I think XP creates restore points automatically when you install something new but I'm not sure on this.
Go to your START>HELP area and read up on Drivers and System restore.
If no one with real knowledge chimes in here go to Microsofts web page or maybe a computer forum for better help than I can give if you do not understand what you find in the Help section.
Good Luck and welcome to CP -
Follow the instructions below and I may be able to debug this through a forum.
click start and type run:
type devmgmt.msc and press enter
expand the dvd/cdrom drives entry and return the information listed.
