No spoilers, but Odin was a massive **** at first and has been by far the biggest challenge in the game. Took me a good 15 attempts and then I just turned the game off for an hour. Came back and got his **** on the first take.

The fight after that is so badass. ;)

The linear gameplay sucks at first, but then you have to realize the first 4 chapters or so is pretty much just a tutorial. The Paradigm Shifts really make the fights a lot more interesting. There's a lot of strategy at play with those.

All in all it's a good game that I'm mostly happy with. I prefer open world, but I understand they probably couldn't have told the story as well that way, and the story has been great so far. Cinematics are very good and there are lots of them.

From what I've read, there is a lot of open world type stuff but it doesn't come until near the end. The earlier parts of other FF games were also actually fairly linear too, this one just seems more streamlined as there are fewer chances to go wandering off for long periods only to find out that you went down a dead end. I wonder how much of the decrease in early open world type stuff was due to making this a cross-platform release.

I look at the first parts as an extended tutorial also. I kind of miss controlling all players but the Paradigm Shifts do make up for that.

I'm on chapter 9 I think, maybe 10. About 30 hrs in and loving every minute. The cut scenes are stunning on the PS3.

    Hello

Was kinda curious what you guys were doing as far as equipment and accessory upgrades? I haven't done any yet, a little at a loss as to which weapon would be best to upgrade....I don't want to spend a bunch of points and come to find out I wasted them...

    Thanks

I guess nobody else has done any either....

I'll probably just concentrate on one weapon for now unless I find a huge stash of cash somewhere...

I upgraded the Gladius I found for Lightning and the Hawkeye(I think?) for Hope. My best party is Lightning, Fang and either Hope or Vanille for a magic user. When you get on the Palamecia, there's a part where you're outside on the deck of the ship and there's a ton of Orion's and big groups of 5 or 6 yellow enemies (I forgot what they're called) that drop silicone oil that is worth a ton of exp. If you fight a lot of the Orions, they drop digital circuits and sometimes perfect resistors, which are worth even more. Also, you can get cerdit and incentive chips from the flying slodiers that you can sell for 500/2500 gill. I walked back and forth here for about two hours and upgraded all my weapons to about level 15 and all of my paradigms are maxed. The fights get tough ahead, so level up while you can

Am now about halfway through Chapter 10, 42 hours in...had a little trouble with Cid but finally got him on the 4th try. Man, you sure burn up those CP points in a hurry now....

I have upgraded some weapons and accessories but really don't see a huge difference, at least for now...

Am in chapter 11 now, man what a difference stepping out in that new area. Been doing some grinding, farming, and have completed 17 of the missions. Will probably move the story on after I get my Cyrstarium maxed out again...

You might want to keep doing some missions. It will take around 900,000 cp for the Crystarium after it expands after the boss at the end of chapter 11. You can then go back and complete some of the harder missions and level up your weapons before moving on to chapter 12

Yeah, FFXIII is a pretty complicated and involved story, tends to be above most peoples heads. And yes been a Bioware fan for years....

If you ever get the chance, though, to play FF II or III(these were the releases on the SNES) I think you'll "get" it:)

FFII was rereleased as FF IV on the GBA, DS, and Chronicles on the PSX one

FFIII was rereleased as FF VI on the GBA, and Anthology on the PSX one

There is nothing complex or deep about any final fantasy game post 6. I don't get them, because I'm not into playing cookie cutter characters that are practically "on rails" through the entire game with almost zero choice.

There is no "role-playing" in final fantasy games. The themes in bioware games are more complex and than square writer could ever even hope to create.

My other half has been playing this game quite a bit since I got it for her. I don't think I could see getting into it myself, but it is absolutely beautiful.

I might play through after she gets done just to look at everything. That's how I've been with SquareSoft and now SquarEnix for a long time. Probably well worth playing, if only for the pretty factor :)

Finished it tonight at 88 hours, will head back to try and finish up the rest of the missions now that the cyrstarium has advanced to the final stage. I had maxed out my points and used them all up and still didn't get the final stage filled up.

Sure was a fun ride, wasn't an easy game by any means....

Gah! I've been hooked! I'm currently on chapter 11, and I've noticed an odd thing. I don't really like the characters, and I think the plot is a bit weak, but I can't stop playing... The combat system, crystarium, and gear leveling have me addicted. Basically, the gameplay. Is that supposed to happen with a rpg?
