I want to get into seperates. As such, I would like a receiver that has pre-outs, an optical input, and enough wattage to drive my center/surrounds. I am also looking for suggestions/options for a cheap 2 channel amp to drive my mains.

Going to drive CS2,70s,60s.

Looking to stay under $400 for both

Thanks

I'm gonna take that as honest good tidings and not as the pesimistic/sarcastic waste of finger dexterity i'm sure it is.

Honestly $400 for both the pre and amp would be awesome, I was thinking $250 for receiver (used off a-gon) and then $150 for a 2 channel amp (again, used) I was mainly looking for suggestions on what to look for, and also anything comprable members are looking to sell.

    Thanks

I'm getting a shipping quote for you this weekend man. :) Might have an amp for you as well. I'll stay in touch. If i have the amp, we can get both there for you and leave enough budget for you to get a remote.

I'm sorry, it really was a genuine sentiment if a little short. My apologies. :o

I prefer onkyo and used onkyo gear can be had in 4-500 dollar range.

Edit: As far as pre/pro's go, are you looking for decoding of latest HiRes codecs etc? HK's are popular around here and you could start with a receiver with pre-outs and add amps as you can afford to.

I do like my current H/K alot, and would for sure be up for getting a nicer one. It seems like $250 to $300 would net me a nice used receiver.

This will be my first venture into seperates, so I am excited but have a small budget

HK is good, and there is also a Sunfire Pre for sale here if you like the sunfire sound.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. If you need help let these guys know. There are many people who will help if you let them know where you are.
    Thanks

Haha, unable to comment on a very wide variety of components.

Never heard much for high-end audio. Even at Best buy or other brick and mortar stores, just never spent the time.

I could tell you a thing or two about 90's sony receivers, or a handful about low end polk/jbl/yamaha components and speakers :)

I definitely recommend an H/K as well - you can get a smoking deal on ebay at the harman kardon store on factory refurbs (latest firmware fixes) check out the 154 and the 254 (for HDMI) Both do not disappoint.

Good Idea, just checked out Harman Kardon's ebay page and there are some good deals there! I like the 254 cause it's 7.1, but my room is only 13'x11' so I don't think I'd really get anything out of it. Also, Its $300 and thats most of my budget.

Will it affect the surround sound experience to have my front L/R powered by a seperate amp and have my center and surround L/R run off a reciever? It seems like the extra power going to the towers would make the speakers seem mismatched

Nah, the majority of the info comes from the mains anyways.

^What he said! :D If you hunt for one of the AVR254's on auction through the H/K ebay store, you can usually pick one up for around 200-250, which is a great deal! Especially with the 16-26-3600 series now out.

Globe, i've got a lead on an amp for you. I'll update when i hear more. I might be able to take care of both for you in one shot. I think we'll be able to squeek in under $400 after shipping, it'll be close, but i think we can do it.
