Anybody else see page 82 of the December issue of TAS? Evidently, ESS Technology and Oppo are combining the Sabre32 DAC and the BDP-83!!!!

Yeah, there has been a little talk about it over at AVS. It'll be interesting to see how it turns out. For me, I'm good with my current BDP-83... but it's cool that they're gonna offer this.Equipment list:

Check this out...NuForce is doing different level mods on the Oppo BD-83. They're also coming out with their own CD player. If it's anything like their amps, they have a winner.

$895 according to NuForce. I would have bit for an extra $100, for $400 I'll just get it modded. -
I wonder how the Nuforce will compare to the ModWright mod?

Better analog sound on the 2ch outputs.
Better analog sound period. Improved output stages for all analog outs.
I'm pretty excited. I wonder if this can be a retrofit upgrade. If so, I'd be inclined to go for it.-Kevin

For the modded price, if I do not use SACD, Would it be better to buy the Pio Elte BDP09 ( street price around $1,500.00)? -
If I understand this page:
http://www.nuforce.com/hi/products/oppo_bdp83se/bdp83-upgrade.php
you can trade in your Oppo 83 for the upgraded Nu Force version at a $300 discount, $995 rather than $1295.
The weakness of the oppo (imo) is redbook 2 channel playback. But a grand would buy a Marantz 8003...tough decision. -
May as well get a dedicated SACD/CD player at that price. Let the Oppo do its magic on video. Better to to do one thing well than try to do everything well.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

The SE replaced the analog section, the OP amps, the DACs for $400.00. I read the Nuforce info, which adds another layer of upgrades to the analog board for an additional $400.
Interesting, but I'm not jumping in.

I say good move on Oppo's part in a way to improve their "Audio Credibility" side of things.
Just curious, and I could be totally wrong on this point, but is this way on Oppo's part to compete with Denon's "Advanced AL32 Processing"?

Going with the position of Marantz.
Leave the source for the best choice for video and forget the image scaler. So the audio will work together. -

The trade in for Oppo with Oppo is $299:
The cost of the upgrade is $299 while a brand new BDP-83SE costs $899. This represents a $100 saving for existing BDP-83 customers willing to accept the non-replaceable front panel. Customers can pay for the upgrade via our online store.
The Nuforce one is more. -
all keep in mind per Oppo's website is you use HDMI then there is no need to upgrade or buy the SE model, this product is only for people that want to use the analog connections.Current HT setup

Ahh-ha. I didn't see the Oppo offer. That's interesting and since I do use the analog connection, it's something to think about. I'm pleased with the current analog performance...somebody do a review please...before the offer expires. They are only 20 minutes away. I might not be down more than a few days.

Same here but I would willing to pay for better.
Somebody over at AVS mentioned speaking with Oppo and they said turnaround time was 3-5 days and that the upgrade resets the warranty.
I am just waiting to get some feedback from early-adopters.-Kevin

Yeah, I just got the add. I also saw that the Oppo will have USB inputs for a music server. I wonder if it will accept a 24/96 signal. -

Yeah +1 here, I love Class D, but I can't say the 1st generation of Nuforce were good. In fact they sounded cheap, but I've heard they've improved on their designs since then. -

Wow -- interesting thread; noticed it as I was beginning to finalize my choice for a new BD player and was seriously considering the BDP-83.
Do these new "SE" implementations have any bearing on users setting up HDMI-only connections? There seems to be a great deal of talk surrounding the analog outputs of this enhanced player as if that's where the improvements are going to essentially lie...I personally will be setting up my next BD player the way I have my current one running, which is a single HDMI connection for audio and video, to my receiver for audio processing, and then passthrough to my display for video. Given this, are there any benefits to this Special Edition Oppo? -
If people are going to go to these extremes with this player I would sooner send it to Dan Wright given his excellent track record.
