My friends Scion TC is very nice inside...

So many newer cars are putting in cheap plastic, I do not understand. I could be wrong, but when I step into the interior of older vehicles, especially those with leather, it seems like the quality is a lot higher than similar vehicles that are produced today. Everyone uses plastic with a fake leather grain for everything... terrible... I had an Infiniti EX 35 that had plastic door panels with leather inlays... that's horrible...

Cars nowadays, like mainstream stereo components, are build to meet a certain price point. One way to meet the price point, and include all the government safety required features (i.e. airbags, tire pressure monitors, etc.), is to cheapen the interior. -
Not all news at Toyota is negative these days. Looks like the FT-86 is getting ready to by "hot rodded" by TRD....
In my opinion this is the best looking car in the thread. I'd buy one.Vinyl, the final frontier...
Avantgarde horns, 300b tubes, thats the kinda crap I want... -

I guess.. but for $40k with a car that size, they couldn't put in something other than plastic? I mean, otherwise that was a great car... though I bet the wood was plastic too... one of my first cars was a 95 cadillac eldo and it had solid wood trim... and leather (or fake leather) door panels. -
Here it is....the production version (in Euro spec)

I hope this doesn't turn into the same situation as the Tundra's and Tacoma's of recent years. Love the exterior, but gag at the inside.I refuse to argue with idiots, because people can't tell the DIFFERENCE!

Part of the car from the front firewall back screams Genesis Coupe.

Car and Driver tested a nearly finished prototype this month. They loved it. Great handling, solid chassis, good acceleration and braking. They said that Subaru hit the mark they were aiming for. (Yes, Subaru did like 90% of the engineering of this car.) I can't wait to see them in person.

oh, and here is a nice leaked photo showing the rear end. Not so much like Hyundai IMO.
For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
It's been a long long time since I've seen a car produced with these proportions--well, one that I could possibly afford anyway. Long hood, hatchback rear, seating closer to the rear wheels than the front... This is my type of car. The first car I purchased was a 1973 Opel GT, and I still own a 1982 RX-7. So yeah, this is the kind of car that speaks to me.
But there's one big "if" factor. Is it RWD? If not, it's 100% poser.

Yes, RWD. And if Subaru has anything to say, STi version with AWD....
-
Yeah just read the C&D article pointing out that it is RWD. Their assessment of it seems to agree with mine:
"At this point, the BRZ appears to be the car we’ve been waiting for—the inexpensive, rear-drive sprite the industry has somehow managed to avoid making for generations."
Hit the nail on the head with that.
Oh and they also had this to say:
"Compared with an Impreza, the AS1’s motor sits 4.7 inches lower and 9.4 inches closer to the center of the car. This down-and-back location essentially precludes all-wheel drive from ever being offered—at least, not with Subaru’s existing transaxles."
AWD is a gimmick anyway IMO, unless you plan on running the Pike's Peak Challenge or something. For a daily driver, the extra weight and extra stuff to break is unwanted, so I will not miss it one bit.
ETA: I hope that wing on the Subaru is optional. That thing is just stupid.

Being a Seattlite, I love AWD and my next daily driver will have all four wheels receiving power as it really helps with the slick and wet roads. The STI version of that car was going to be my next question, as 2.5 turbo with a 6 speed and limit slip diff would be awesome.

I used to drive my RWD '73 Opel GT to and from work through blizzards without the aid of AWD. Yes, uphill both ways.

I don't think that even classifies as a car. More so a go-cart with a shell. Yeah, I'm that old too.HT SYSTEM-

The Opel GT may have been a odd duck, but it was certainly more than a go-cart. In many respects it was ahead of its time. If you ever look at one in person, check out the tolerances at the gaps in the body work. Actually that's a trick, because there are no gaps in the body work!! The Opel GT had a monocoque body. One solid, sleek form. Don't see that any more, unfortunately.

Well aware of that, thats why I said it was a go-cart with a shell, a one piece shell. Didn't think anything on that car was ahead of it's time. Not to mention they constantly broke down. Never saw the attraction aside from looking like a mini corvette. Maybe you had better luck with yours, I dunno, but mine was a pos.HT SYSTEM-

Most cars in 1973 were body-on-frame, so the monocoque body was a step in the right direction towards unibody construction. As for being ahead of its time, it was a small, lightweight, affordable 4-cylinder that took well to hot rodding--just like the car that is the topic of this thread (and thus my attraction to it). Granted it was not the most reliable car ever made, but I think the same could be said for most any car from that era. I certainly enjoyed mine.

Lots of photos out now that it has been shown at the Toykyo Motor Show.
(love the Subaru Blue)

This is, in all likelihood, exactly what the North American car will look like. Holly Cow, talk about worthless back seats. I'd rather it be a 2-seater and save a little weight. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
Yes I was actually quite surprised that they bothered with rear seats when I saw the photos. There is a chance that the North American version will not have rear seats, a la the Honda CRZ. For the US market, Honda felt that Americans would consider the rear seats too small to be useful, so they just removed them and replaced it with a large parcel shelf. They may end up doing something similar for the BRZ. Personally I like the option of the rear seat. Sure it's not going to be ideal, but in a pinch, better to have the option than not.

The first review of the Scion FR-S is in from autoguide.com (with video)....
The best Toyota in 20 years
In a related note, Subaru has confirmed that their next generation WRX will pack a new 2.0L turbocharged flat-four powerplant with a targeted horsepower rating of 270-hp. The powerplant will be a turbocharged version of the FA20 powerplant found in the new Subaru BRZ/Scion FR-S. -
-
Toyota just announced official prices for the Scion FR-S....The spiritual successor to the Toyota AE86, the rear-wheel drive Scion FR-S will start at just $24,200 for the six-speed manual transmission model. Those who prefer not to shift gears themselves can opt for the six-speed automatic for $1,100 more, or a total of $25,300.
Standard on all FR-S models will be a 200 hp 2.0-liter direct-injection 4-cylinder with a limited slip differential. With an ultra-low center of gravity, the FR-S also delivers a 53/47 weight balance.
Other standard equipment includes 17-inch wheels with 215/45/17 tires, a dual-exhaust system, LED taillights, a tilt and telescopic leather steering wheel, FR-S branded floor mats, a 300-watt eight-speaker AM/FM/CD/USB Pioneer audio system and Bluetooth. Seven colors will be available: Raven, Asphalt, Hot Lava, Argento, Ultramarine, Firestorm and Whiteout.
