Who still own and spin DVD-A?

I haven't been able to really spend time on my system as I used to do. Since my modded universal Pio-DV-563 player is in the bedroom, it's playtime has been severely curtailed in the past couple years. Having said that, last night, I spinned Donald Fagen DVD-A on the system. I have to say I forgot how good DVD-A can be, especially on those great recordings. Missed them quite a bit and haven't even bought new SACD for a while either. Time flies and it has been 6 years since I had my last purchase of DVD-A. It's a shame that a perfectly good technology and resolution go to waste (well, along with HD-DVD and even SACD).

Carry on, and enjoy what you have....:)
I am sorry, I have no opinion on the matter. I am sure you do. So, don't mind me, I just want to talk audio and pie.

I still play a few DVD-A discs... mostly Beck's Sea Change and Glen Phillips' Abulum. I have SACD now as well, but the only discs I've seen that I wanted enough to buy were the two Nickel Creek releases.

I am able to buy my first universal player (my previous players have all been Sony and Sony don't like DVD-A's) and I look forward to spinning my DVD-A's of Elvis, the Beatles, Linda Ronstadt, Seal, Randy Newman, and Donald Fagen.

I am still looking for the Britney Spear DVD-A.

    Are the Sanatana DVD-A's ok?

I own exactly three DVD-A's. NIN - With Teeth and The Downward Spiral 10th Anniversary Edition and Foo Fighters - One By One.

I Have to say that I Prefer the SACD's I own and I actually have The Downward Spiral in both formats. Given a choice I would take an SACD first but I will still purchase DVD-A's if I could find what I want on them.

Didn't know "Downward Spiral" was released on DVD-A

That "Brothers In Arm" DVD-A (on DualDisc) has really appreciated in value, I've heard.

Edit: The lowest price currently on ebay for a "Brothers In Arms" DualDisc is $68.00

I've got a handful that I listen to on my Marantz DV-9500 universal:

    • The Who, Tommy
    • Neil Young, Harvest
    • Björk, Vespertine
    • Queensrÿche, Empire
    • Natalie Merchant, Tigerlily
    • Alice Cooper, Welcome to My Nightmare
    • Seal, IV
    • Donald Fagen, Morph the Cat
    • Steely Dan, Gaucho
    • Stone Temple Pilots, Core
    • Dar Williams, The Beauty of the Rain

Most of them sound somewhere between pretty darn good and awesome. One issue I have with DVD-A is that, unlike with SACD, not every title has a 2-channel mix, so you're left listening to a downmixed version of the surround mix, which I imagine has to be a compromise in quality.

By and large though, I enjoy my DVD-A's, and I appreciate that I've been able to add most of them to my collection for less than I average paying for my SACDs.

I just remembered that I've got that one as well, but haven't really listened to it yet. Am I correct in remembering it as being surround-only?

Everything I own on DVD-A sounds the best of any of the music I own on my system. I have about a dozen DVD-A's. The best are Becks Sea Change, Eagles Hotel California, Porcupine Tree Deadwing, and Metallica The Black Album. They all sound pretty awesome though and they blow away the SACD's I have as well.

Do you have any titles on both DVD-A and SACD to actually compare, or are you just making an offhanded comment?

I have found that SACD is superior.

Not an offhand comment at all. On my system specifically, DVD-A blows away SACD. No, I dont have any SACD's of the same titles, but I know what sounds best to my own ear. Not to say SACD doesnt sound great, its just that the clarity and quality of the music sounds better to me on DVD-A. Becks Sea Change is probably the best sounding album I own. I also have Steely Dans Gaucho on DVD-A and it just too sweet for words. Maybe SACD would sound better on someone elses system, but on mine, DVD-A wins every time.

I really enjoy listening to DVD-A, as well as SACD. I've got over 20 DVD-A titles. Some of my favs are
    Fleetwood Mac-Rumours
ELP-Brain Salad Surgery+ the Single Lucky Man (Really good)
Eagles, America and Jackson Browne are also good.

So, where would be the aftermarket for DVD-A other than scambay?

I still have both formats. I purchased a new Pioneer Elite dv58av just so I can send both formats over HDMI. It's so much of a cleaner install.
    I don't listen to DVD-A much , more SACD.

If anyone wants to try out Fagen's Morph the Cat, here is a (currently) cheap copy at our favorite auction site.

If it's the same as the one I've got, it has an identical redbook CD along with the DVD-A.

    Both sound very good!

I have both SACD & DVD-As that I listen to. It's only a handful since they don't put music I'm interested in buying on them usually.

I would kill to have the Eagles catalog of music on either format!

Between him and Steely Dan, I have several of their albums (Gaucho, Nightly, Two Against Nature, Everything Must Go, and a couple more), and I have to say only two of these that get play time more: Nightfly and Gaucho. So, I hear ya Mike...

    No doubt.

I have a few DVD-A. R.E.M., Diana Krall, Blue Man Group, and The Flaming Lips. If you've never heard a Flaming Lips DVD-A, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy. I really don't even care for them too much, but the surround mix is awesome.

Also have a few Dual-Discs: Our Lady Peace, The Wallflowers, Dave Matthews Band, and probably a couple of others I'm not thinking of right now.
