I find that if i use a vintage pair of 2-Way bookshelf speakers on top of my 1Cs that i get a more richer mids and crisper highs - especially nice when i'm listening to 60s Jazz and post WWII big band Albums.
Wayne, that is the absolute worst thing you can do to a pair of SDA's. 2 pair of speakers are never a good idea for 2 channel audio. I have been down that path and you will never get the lobing issue solved. Yes, you might be able to get the frequencies you desire but the image smearing will always remain. The only way to rid yourself of lobing is to go back to one set of speakers. Besides, you are killing the magic that SDA's offer by pairing them with another speaker.

Let me ask you this.....when you listen to music, are you off axis or sitting in the sweet spot with the SDA's properly positioned?

Treitz3, thanks for the good info - now I know what lobing is, and i'm sure my placement is a bit awkward and my space in my home office / den / spare bedroom is somewhat limited:

i have my 1Cs against the wall against the corner in on a wall that is about 10.5 ft. across, and i'm sitting at my keyboard right now about 3 and half feet from the same wall -- guess that puts me to far forward as well as generating too much bass sonically by way of placement of speakers too near the wall and corner...

p.s... someone give me a link for SDA Caps and Resistor upgrades (please)

    thanks in advance

Wayne, no offense meant, but with that room set up you'll never get what the SDA's are capable of, crossover mods or not. I would suggest getting some nearfield monitors.

Ouch man, F1's correct. You need a bigger room or monitors. Have you ever seen how a pair of SDA's are supposed to be properly set up?

I havent read the manual in xteen years -- but if i remember correctly they should be no closer than 10 inches from the wall and at least 2 or 3 feet from the corners of the room and at least X [(6? 8? 10?) the distance from the plane where the listener is seated] feet apart-- and yes i should move them to the family room and set them up correctly. I think i'll make that my christmas present to myself :)

The distance from the back wall will vary, but no closer than 10 inches is wrong. I have mine at 6 inches. They should be no closer than 3 feet from any side wall and a minimum of 6 feet apart with no toe-in.

It's not mine although I did some work on it.
Someone was talking about Maggotbox stuff earlier in this thread, but I couldn't find the link at the time -- I know that this is vitally important to all who've posted in this thread! :-P

It is indeed a nice amp; surprisingly so. I have one of the EL84 variants in semi-regular use in the basement.

I have to give CV their due.

If it were not for my roommate in college having them over 25 years ago, I would not have been introduced to fine stereo reproduction. Yea, they are loud assed speakers (very efficient sound level reproduction, verses wattage put in), but without having been introduced to them, I would not have evolved into wanting to obtain better fidelity that my polks have.

So a proverbial "tip of the hat" concerning CV speakers!
