Setting up Onkyo 607 "Audissey" 5-channel?

I just got an Onkyo 607 and went to go set it up. I have a 5.1 channel system setup with the speakers that are down in my signature.

The problem I have is that when I plug in the Audyssey microphone, the receiver goes straight into the Audyssey setup, and does not allow me to specify whether I have a 5.1 or 7.1 based system. It automatically assumes I have a 7.1 setup with height speakers in the front.

The Audyssey setup lets me remove the front height speakers from my setup so it doesn’t test them. However it has left/right rear side speakers and left/right rear back speakers, when I do not have left/right rear side speakers. In the setup menu, I cannot remove the left/right rear side speakers without removing the left/right rear back speakers. When I attempt to run the microphone setup anyway, it tries to send a sound to the left/right side speakers and they don’t exist in my 5.1 setup, so the setup defaults to always fail because it can’t detect those speakers.

Is there a way around this?

Thanks.
~Dan

I could've sworn in a 5.1 setup, the surround speakers are actually to the side of you at ear level....and for 7.1 they were your rear speakers (rear center if you're running 6.1).

I was thinking the same thing Freddy. I ran Auddessy and disabled the side surrounds to setup my 5.1.

That's not how it's stated in the Onkyo manual. Basically, most the Dolby DTS and other format sound is sent to the back rear speakers. The side rear speakers get a trickle of the ambient sound for enhanced realism.

I have a 606. Audyssey detects your speaker setup so no need to specify. However you DO need to hook up your "rear" speakers in a 5.1 setup to the "side" terminals on the back of your amp. The rear teminals can be used for "zone 2" or just left unused.

In other words. For 5.1 - use surround L/R

    Leave "surround back" unused.

Good luck and if you have any more questions, let us know. I have done a LOT of messing around with Audyssey. I love it and set up right, it makes a significant improvement. Be sure to put the mic on a tripod and take measurements at ear level. If you have a sub, set it to LFE or set your crossover as high as it will go. Also, when you are done, you may want to make some small adjustments to the settings Audyssey comes up with . Usually these:
    crossover freq:
    Front L/R - 80hz
    center - 80hz

    LPF of LFE 120hz

I find it is best to leave the levels alone.

I'll get back into HT in another year or two, I'm enjoying 2-chan way too much :D

Hope that solves your problem dvran! It should though, I'm almost sure.

If you're only using one pair of surround speakers, they should be hooked up to the "side" surround channels, not the surround back channels.

Since you have them hooked up to the surround back channels, the AVR is sensing them and setting it for 7.1.

The instructions worked. Although I feel the Audyssey setup has put more "ooomph" in my side speakers, and I hope they don't dominate the sound stage.

    Thanks.

Glad to hear it. You may want to bump the sides down a couple DB. I think I have. Either way, Audyssey is really nice to have. Run with it for awhile and see how you like it. Remember, if you move anything, re-run the setup.

    Cheers!

You may have to adjust the levels to suit your tastes. I recently re-calibrated my HT setup...I ran Audyssey...it did great as far as the distance measurements go, but I reset some of the XO points, and I readjusted all of the speaker levels with an SPL meter.

I had to bump the center up quite a bit, the surrounds ended up getting turned down a little bit, and the sub had to be turned up a bit.

As long as you moved the xover points up, you are ok. If down, Audyssey isn't working like it should. We probably do the same thing though. All xover points to 80hz and adjust level trims.

I have found that if I take good measurements, the distance and level settings are spot on. But I like to run my front 3 "small" and Audyssey always detects them as large. Plus, I bump my rear speakers down just a smidge.

I think Audyssey set my fronts for full range, but the rest of the speakers were all set to 80.

Now, they're set at 80hz across the board, with the sub LPF set at 120hz.

Thanks everyone it was only the debounce setting of 0, set it to 1000 as per Sean and the mach3 forum and it runs perfect.

Ran the roadrunner file 6 or 7 times without any problems whatsoever.

    Hi Guys,

Need some help with the Onkyo 607. I recently purchased with the Monitor Vector Audio package.

I have the all the speakers wall mounted, and the the surrounds about 6 ft high on the rear wall pointing directly at the listening position.

I have set up with audysee, and taken measurements from 3 positions. All the measurements came back correct, the centre X0 is set to 65 and the rest are on 70. I am finding that the surround channels seem very quiet, and also the centre.

I have turned them both up, but still finding the surrounds a bit weak. Have tested on a few Blu ray disks ( matrix ), and same kind of results. On an action scene there is definitely sound coming out of the speakers, but not to the level of the fronts.

The only time they really come into play is when I am gaming on Call of duty.

Any tips you can give would be really appreciated.

Make sure to follow the instructions carefully. Make sure the microphone is at the listening level when sitting down. I had to use a camera tripod to make sure it was at ear level. Make sure you select 5-channel setup.

In my case I have a 5.1 setup and have my rear speakers in the rear, and not on the sides like the setup wanted me to. I couldn't understand why it wanted the side but I went ahead with the setup and left my speakers in the rear and it worked fine.

With the Audyssey setup, I have a very balanced sound with strong center and strong rear sound. This is what I was lacking with my old receiver.

You may also want to check which surround mode you have the amp set to. The various modes will change how much you hear coming from the various speakers.
