Most of those features are already available on the older version PS3 80 gig...which is also firmware upgradable? No?

+1, the 80GB PS3 is the best one they ever made. Besides some of the later version 60GB's. I am not gonna get the Slim, mostly because of all of the stuff they had to take out of it to make it so affordable. Still a very soild unit, but not as good as it's predacesors.

Is it IR controllable without a adapter? Is it IP controllable? I also heard it bitstreams now.
You lose the ability to play SACD correct?

I don't see all the value in going with the new Ps3 over the old one if control has not improved. So what it can bitstream.

I love my PS3 albeit the fan is a little loud sometimes....anyone else heard this?

It does not have an IR port, so you still need the adapter. It Bitstreams the new HD codecs, also can still do LPCM. No SACD, that was lost after the newer 80GB's came out. Not backwards compatable, no SD card readers, and no option to add a secondary OS. I am with you Dan, the new Slim is an ok deal for what it does and is still a bargain for someone looking to use it as a Blu-Ray player, gaming system, and media center. Just lost a lot of good stuff that my 80GB has in order to make it more affordable.

I love my PS3 too, I have an Intercooler on it and that thing can put out some noise when tured up, but the stock configuration can be a bit noisy too.

Yeah, it is a very good investment IMHO. Keeps air moving into and out of the PS3, since as you know I'm sure, it gets pretty darn hot. It has an adjustment knob on it so you can turn it up if you are really working it hard. Have had one on mine since Day 1, and it was the best $30 I have spent so far for it. Also, it makes the PS3 look like a beast, lol. I have had many people see my PS3 and say, what version is that? Link below.....

LOL, I figured I wouldn't have to twist your arm much. One thing though, like I said it can be kinda loud, but nothing the volume knob on my Onkyo can't take care of, lol.

Hi Jeff. mine is in a fairly tight spot. How much wider does that make it. By the way I rearly game on it so do you think its still worth getting?

Buy one, but save the receipt....

I had one that had a mind of it's own. The fans were unbearably loud, and they would speed up all on their own. (there is a trim knob to control fan speed)

Maybe it was a dud, but the one I bought, did not work out for me. I ended up venting my entertainment center instead, which worked out much better for me.

I don't know exactly how much "girth" it adds to the unit itself, but I would guesstimate about 2" in width and about 2" in depth, give or take. I am at work right now so I can't get exact numbers, but I would imagine that is a fair guess. I would recommend one even if you just use it for Blu-Ray's too, that is pretty much all I use mine for these days, besides some web surfing and I have mine running all the time. As Less said though, they can get pretty loud if you get a rogue fan (I have one too) and it can be annoying, but I just turn up the volume on my Onk, and I sit far enough away from my PS3 that it is a non issue. Like I said though, best $30 I have spent on that badboy.

What are you doing to that PS3? Mine almost never got hot! Of course it's not in a cabinet...it sits on top of a shelf with total clearance to the ceiling.

Intercooler....sounds like something for a tailgate party? Does it come with Beer...?

LOL, I have an older 80GB model and they are subject to overheating in my experience. My Son's have overheated two from being on them 10 hours a day. Got one refurbed and have another sitting in my closet collecting dust waiting to get sent back to Sony when I have the cash to have them try to repair it. Mine is out in the open too, and has always gotten hot when used for long periods. Just wanna be careful with this one since it is one of the "good" models, and if anything ever goes wrong with it and I have to send it in I can guarentee I won't get this one back. I'll end up getting one of the crappy 80GB ones, that was what happened to my sons when we sent it in. It does seem like something you would have at a tailgate party, but unfortunately beer was not included.

I am not up on PS3 at all....aside from HD size are there other differences between the 40GB and the 80GB models ?

My launch 60GB's fans ramp up within a few minutes of operation, even sitting on the XMB. I know people that have taken apart theirs, cleaned them out fully and the system still ramps up the fans, which is discouraging. Recently I replaced my standalone BD player in the bedroom with a PS3 Slim and it is dead silent, then again so was the PS3 in my living room when I first purchased it. The launch console has never once been in a cabinet and I have always dusted it and blown compressed air in the vents as I do with all of my electronics. I am beginning to think it may be a thermal paste issue and the sensors are reading the temperature on the CPU as too high therefor ramping up the fan speeds on the console.

The 40GB models are not backwards compatible (meaning they can't play PS1 or PS2 games) only two USB ports in the front, no flash media readers, and of course the smaller HD. Depending on which model you get the 80GB models are backwards compatiable, have 4 USB ports in the front panel, have flash media readers, and support SACD playback. If you can get your hands on one of the good 80GB models they are, like I said earlier, IMHO the best PS3 ever made. Unfortunately the majority of the 80GB models out there for sale are probably going to be the latter of the two models I mentioned. I just bought an 80GB from a guy at work. It has the media reader and 4 USB ports. It was the Motorstorm edition. Too bad I don't own a SACD or any PS1 /2 games. Actually, the last game system I played before I bought this was a Nintendo 64. A guy at my local GameCrazy will trade mine for a new slim PS3. Worth it or hold onto the 80? He told be the new slims run cooler and quieter.

IMHO, I would keep that 80GB PS3 and never look back. It does everything the new Slim does (except Bitstream the new HD codecs, and has a smaller HD) and it does so many things the new Slim's don't. Yeah, it may run a little louder, but that's nothing the volume knob on your AVR can't take care of, lol. That guy just wants to get his hands on a real PS3, lol. Seriously though, the good 80's are hard to come by and are easily still worth the cost of the new Slim, but IMHO are 100 times better, which is why the guy wants to trade you, lol.

Just make sure you do the updates on a regular basis for firmware changes. You'll like the new "sparkly" background now.

I only got a Slim because my 60g broke. I like it fine. I like the bitstreaming. It does get a lot hotter though. When I pull out a disc it feels like toast from the oven.
