Split A/V From Coaxial Cable

Cpyder Posts: 514
I've managed to figure out how to get my video and audio from their respective sources (Xbox 360, PS2, Computer, etc...) sent to the right places (Eg, Video to tv (of course! :)) and audio to the receiver to play through my 2.0 channel system.)

One problem remains. How do I get my cable TV signal (which is delivered using a coaxial cable) split so the audio can be played through my speakers and not through the tv's built in speakers. My receiver does not have a coaxial input.

I'm guessing I need to buy some sort of splitting box, correct?

Thanks.

Splitting the coaxial cable won't necessarily send the audio to the receiver alone for many reasons. If you really think about it, what you're proposing is the way you'd add a splitter to send cable tv to 2 different televisions. Your receiver does not have a built in tuner to deal with any audio/video sent over the cable, plus you wouldn't be able to change channels from a single cord if for some reason you were ever to hook up the cable to your receiver lol.

It's better to look at your TV. Any audio RCA/optical outputs on it? What I did many years ago is hook up my cable box to a "hi-fi" stereo vcr. From there, I used the coaxial out on the vcr to go to my tv and used the audio-out (rca) from the vcr to my receiver. The only thing here is though, you'll need your tv on chan 3/4 (if using coaxial) or video input (if using composite from your vcr).

I never thought about the "receiver not having a tuner" part. So if I split the cable, the tv would be able to change the channel and such but the receiver would not know about this change and the audio would not change. (and/or would not be present at all because the receiver wouldn't know how to deal with the signal) I don't think my tv has any audio outs. :( Hmmm... the vcr idea is looking better. There's got to be something cleaner, right?

Thats the cheaper/easy solution I used during highschool. Of course I bought my vcr new, but nowadays you can snag one on cl for about $10 bucks...even a good model. Got the funds down the road for a newer/better TV?

A new tv is scheduled for pretty far down the road probably. Besides waiting for OLEDs to come down in price, I'm also transitioning from undergrad to grad school/full time job. (Haven't decided 100%) Which means, right now, not a lot of money for a new tv.

Hmm, is it an LCD/plasma or the tube-type television?

Anyway no matter, you should just check to see if it has a set of audio outputs. Just take a look yourself, wouldn't hurt.

I did that too from my cable box seeing as it has RCA outputs (1 set variable, 1 set fixed), toslink and hdmi out. I'm assuming he has no cable box seeing as he said he runs the coaxial cable straight to his tv

I think that is a safe assumption, did you try connecting with the various option's on your setup if so what did you like best?

I tried HDMI and toslink only, i preffered the toslink as i was getting some "handshake" going on with the HDMI running through the receiver. I found it much better routing HDMI directly to the panel and toslink to AVR :o

I just used toslink from my cable box to the Denon AVR2805 I was using since it didn't have hdmi ins/outs. A beast of a receiver so never had the need to pick something new up. Now that I think about it though.....I never even bothered watch movies on cable or even on-demand. Only on the BDP/DVDP :)

From the GFX card/sound card on my HTPC to my AVR/panel is a pair of HDMI's but we watch a lot of flic's through HDTV so the toslink was a must IMHO

LCD. I gave it a good look down and could not find any audio outs. Tonight, I'll move the speakers and actually get behind the tv to look. But I'm quite sure it doesn't.

    Alright.
Though I'd be surprised if it didn't have any. Mine has several component and composite inputs as well as hdmi, and my analog/composite outputs are next to a set of those. At first glance they look like inputs but upon further inspection....one of them is actually a set of outs!

Hopefully your TV has them though.

That's what I was thinking as well.

Are you sure you have no audio outs from the back of your TV. I have a 19" lcd in our guest bedroom and it has tonns of ins and outputs.

    Wow. Bummer.

Yeah Kawizx9r's idea is the next best thing. Doesn't your cable provider give out set-top boxes? Perhaps you could get one of those. Even the SD versions have stereo outs.

A pawn shop oughta have one for cheap. Hell I'd give ya one if you were local.

How about splicing the cables that go to the internal speakers and route that signal to my receiver?

Or would that be crossing the line of respectability.

And just plain wrong. The speakers are amplified. You need a line level for your receiver.
Do what kawizx9r suggested and find a cheap VCR. Done.
