MW6500 Replacement

I had noticed that one of my Monitor 5A's, depending on how evenly I presses the woofer in, had a little scratchiness. I can't swear that heard any when playing music. Since none of my other Polk MW's do this, I decided to replace it.

I was not sure if I should go with a new MW6502 from Polk or try to snag a vintage MW6500. Polk CS says that the MW6502 has the same Thiele / Small parameters as the MW6500. I have heard some say they prefer the MW6502.

If I replaced one with the MW6502, I figured I'd end up replacing both and cost me double. I also like the idea of keeping them all vintage. Therefore, I opted to find a used MW6500. I did find one, and probably paid too much, but the mfg date is within a month of my Monitor 5A's and it is like brand new. I can't say yet if it sounds better than the old one but it sounds good and I have peace of mind (and a spare MW6500).

Out of curiosity, anyone here compare the 6502 sound vs the 6500?
Stan

The 6502 is 4ohms, and the 6500 is 8ohms. They are not interchangeable.
Please. Please contact me a ben62670 @ yahoo.com. Make sure to include who you are, and you are from Polk so I don't delete your email. Also I am now physically unable to work on any projects. I just asked Polk CS about the impedance and they realized that they told me the wrong replacement. The replacement should be the MW6503.

I've used 6502's in y monitor 7B's. No problems at all with the different impedance.

Were some of the MW6500 paper surrounds? Mine are rubber.

As far as I know the Monitor 5A had the MW6500. I believe that the Monitor 5B used the MW6502. I also believe that the 5B has a larger cabinet. I have seen two specs for the Monitor 5B. apparently, the earlier versions were a 4 ohm system and later were 6 ohms.

It would be interesting to do a comparison of the MW6500, MW6502, MW6503, etc.

I have compared the 6500,6600X and 6501. They all sound different. The 6500 and 6501 are more alike then different. Are you looking for a 6500 with the grey cardboard around the rim or not? keith

I actually picked up a MW6500 dated within one month of my originals. So, I am no longer in need.
    Thanks though
