More BS from the NFL

Ripped from the headlines........
The National Football League has fined Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis $25,000 for a hit on Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco on Sunday, ignoring Ochocinco's request that NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell spare Lewis a fine.

The hit happened when Ochocinco was running a pattern over the middle, and it sent Ochocinco's helmet flying and drew a 15-yard penalty, helping the Bengals get into position for their game-winning touchdown in a 17-14 victory. After the game, Ochocinco posted a direct request to Goodell on Twitter, saying there was no harm done and he didn't want to see Lewis lose money.

Goodell, however, didn't listen: ESPN's Chris Mortensen reported on Friday that Lewis's next paycheck will be $25,000 lighter. The Baltimore Sun notes that the fine represents 42.5 percent of Lewis' $58,823 weekly salary.

And while Ochocinco might not like it, this was obviously the right call: Lewis clearly led with his helmet and drilled a defenseless receiver in the chops. That's a textbook personal foul, and it's a play that gets players fined every week.

Pretty soon we'll be watching flag football.

Yeah it does suck! Totally agree. The NFL will soon be 2 hand touch after they define flag pulling too agressive.

I'd like to discuss another NFL problem I have, but will refrain since it will only go 1 direction.

Gotta agree here. Funny thing is,with all the added B.S. about Rush Limbaugh, the diversity police will soon pay a visit to the NFL. Those dopes who run the NFL sure know how to blow a good thing when they have it. Because of Brady, you have to knock a QB over with your breath now.....pitifull I tell ya.

I don't mind...it helped the Bengals win. Seriously though, I think it's a good thing to protect the players to a point. The "Brady" rule has become a joke in protecting the NFL money, I mean quarterbacks. That pass was way over Chad's head and Lewis was definitely leading with his helmet, which is a penalty. With all the new research about concussions and how it effects people later in life, this is something that needs to be done. I know they make a lot of money, but they live much shorter lives on average in comparison to the rest of the population.

I disagree with you here. I understand that they've sissified the game quite a bit, but the rules are the rules. I don't see the need to have a guy getting blown apart in that situation if it's an unnecessary hit. The ball was clearly over him and well past him by the time that Ray lead with his helmet. I wish they would take away some of the rules against hitting these guys, but this is one that should, and will, stay in effect.

The NFL is close to going the way of the NBA for me. I was a HUGE NBA fan growing up and followed it closely all the way through the Bird and Magic years and with mild interest in the early MJ years. Now I don't even watch the playoffs.

I've enjoyed the NFL as a casual fan for as long as I can remember...but I rarely watch anymore as it just doesn't interest me. All professional team sports have become too much about the so-called stars, too much "just entertainment" and not enough about the competition. People like Mark Gastineau and Billy "white shoes" Johnson were the beinging of the downturn with the "sack dance" and "touchdown dance" IMO.

As to Jesse's OP...I expect OSHA would love to get it's hand on the NFL. They would would make sure professional football was a "safe" career....

I watched the game and saw that play - head first, cheap shot - foul was rightly called.

Gotta agree with Erik, it was a blatant head shot even it was Ocho Cinco. Lewis launched himself head first upward into Ocho. The intent was to dangerously blow somebody up. The same effect on the play would have happened with Lewis' shoulder into Cinco's upper chest. I'm just surprised the players weren't looking for Ocho Cinco's gold teeth on the ground.

I say this having been around long enough to remember Jack Tatum's hit on Daryll Stingley back in the 1970's and the tragic quadroplegic life Stingley lived until his passing.

It may have been different had Lewis gone for a body shot to go thru Ocho.

But no - he targeted Ocho's head, led with his own - maybe if he had his eyes up he could have changed his trajectory and target - but no - head lowered, eyes lowered for the 'bang' hit.

I love a deep cleat hit or block or the clean pancake tackle, but there's cheap shots that should be enforced with prejudice to send a clear message that purposed shots to the head are not tolerated.

    Nothing new…….
“The situation came to an end in 1905 when there were 19 fatalities nationwide. Theodore Roosevelt threatened to shut the game down if drastic changes were not made.”
While I do not care for the wimpifying of many sports, if it was a flagrant violation the rules need to be enforced (I did not see the play). If it was a bad call, it wasn’t the first and won’t be the last.

While not all players fit into this mold, I have given up on most pro sports because of the prima donna attitudes so many share.

on some tracks restrictor plates keep the cars on the track and not in the stands. Its more about safety for the fans.

While fan safety is important, along with driver safety, slowing the cars down is not the correct approach. I am sure there are other ways to keep the cars out of the stands. That is what the roof flaps accomplish. A minor mod so that if a car gets sideways or tail first then the aerodynamics are interrupted and keep the car on the ground. Other aero mods are certainly possible. That's why we have wind tunnels.

Racing, in my mind, is building the fastest car possible, and having it last 'x' miles. Period. If a team wants to strap rockets onto the car, and can insure other cars will not be incinerated, then they should be able to do that. It would be nice to hear a spotter say, "Go with throttle up."

True, I don't understand the double standard where drug-addicts cannot own an NFL team, but murderers are allowed to play in the NFL.

With that said, the NFL is still the strongest pro-sport vs. baseball, hocket, basketball. and dodgeball.

I agree that the NFL has become more "wussified". That Tom Brady penalty a couple weeks ago (against the Ravens) was an absolute joke and helped them win the game. Howeve, the hit that Lewis layed on Ochocinco was a definite cheap shot and something that could have caused very serious injury. Ochoconco's blessings or not, the next guy might not be so lucky. You can call it risk of the sport or whatever, but that was a blatant cheap shot and a disregard of the rules.
