    Hey freddy

How much do you think a black pair of them could be had for .Alot of people say they are better value to sound than martin logans . How do these perform at really low volumes ? do they loose transparency?

Color shouldn't be a determining factor at all when purchasing speakers, unless it's because they stood out in the sun too long/have mold issues/etc. lol You can always buy replacement socks and change them yourself, even refinish the rails if you ever wanted to.

I've never heard a pair of Martin Logans so I can't compare them at all, although I'd like to try a pair maybe someone can chime in on this subject.

At low volumes, they're just as airy and detailed as they are at higher volumes. Keep in mind though, these aren't the kind of speakers you use if you want loud music. They're more for critical listening imo. I'm limiting my comments because like I've stated before, the contacts on the fuse holders have alot of corrosion so I'd like to take care of that first thing. Otherwise, they sound like Maggies should sound. :)

Did someone remove the invisible blanket from over my tweeters or what?!

Got to work on the contacts as soon as my package came in. The plates were dirtier than I though, I mean upon spraying the deoxidizing solution I heard the stuff sizzle. Got in there with Q-tips, trying to rub off all the dirt and grime just to rinse and repeat.

I'm just glad to say that I'm even happier with the way the speakers sound, and can't wait to get some tubes rolling through the pre and some new IC's from Ben :)

Freddy, Congrats on the new purchase! Welcome to my world! I've been enjoying my stats and tube pre-amp for years, wouldn't part with them for the world. Such a unique, revealing sound. Just wait until you start getting different types of tubes and checking out the changes in the sound. Way cool, not cheap though! LOL! Best of luck! DJ

    Thanks DJ.
I'm already wanting to roll different types of tubes, but I'm trying hard to fix the more important things. Still need 1 more pair of decent IC's, well I'll need a better set of speaker cables.....wait next couple of months I'll be saying I need a new pre....then a new power cord.....then even better IC's and speaker cables when does it end?!

Well just a follow up, I've given the tube preamp I just picked up as well as the maggies some more time running various cd's and I'm really liking them alot more than when I first got them. I did mention earlier that I had one crappy pair of IC's (from pre to amp), well I replaced those with another pair of AQ Sidewinder's (already have a pair from source to pre) and it opened things up significantly. Soundstage doubled, I mean it is amazing now how these things sound. I'm still going to limit my remarks because my small space doesn't do my 2-chan justice. My plans are to move the speakers to the opposite side of the room as well as everything else. I have windows/curtains that sit right behind my maggies and I think there's a loss of soundstaging because they should have a plain wall right behind them. I do know that they should be pulled out about 3' as the manual says (yes I know these aren't a must, just guidelines) but I am curious as to how they'll sound with a wall behind them.

I haven't received the rca cleartops I just recently purchased, but so far I'm pretty satisfied with the mullards in the pre right now. I've never had such a sweet sounding 2-channel setup until now....and it's only going to get better. I thought about keeping my maggies stock until another/newer pair came up locally and just upgrade that way, but I think I'd rather work on my current pair and redo the crossovers. If anyone's really interested, I'd like to post my work+pictures on a separate thread just like my DIY sub and such, otherwise I'll just do the work and post a follow-up review here.

It's actually 3 windows, and the three have a combined width of over 8'-9'. It's going to suck moving stuff over, such as the 90+pound sub and then some but when I've got nothing to do one of these days....there'll be no excuse not to do it.

Well, I still need to sand the sucker and fill up the rest of the holes. My friend let me borrow a power sander so I'll put some work into it soon.

As for the deoxit, oh yea. Stuff works great, I'm thinking of using it on my amp and source just to clean things up....never know how dirty something really is unless you try this stuff. Plus its cheap as heck. It claims that it cleans and protects, but you can buy one of those pens/sprays that works as a way to protect anything from getting dirty again.

Well fortunately where I live, I only have like 1 other neighbor that lives just 2 doors down from me so cranking the stereo up isn't a problem at all (even with the sub going).

As far as the sub goes, think I'll just go with black. Something neutral so it blends in wherever I place it wherever I live afterward. Depending how its coming out after a coat, I'll try to go for something smooth....almost a piano finish.

I love black it's one of my favourite colour's :) Having a power sander will make the finishing job easier also if you do the wet sanding between coat's it should turn out stellar ;)

So, I've still got the speaker cables burning in because they haven't been used for quite some time and am really liking what I'm hearing.

Only thing is though, I'm getting even more bass from my Maggies than before. So here's the gripe, when I turn it up to volumes I usually have these at....the bass is making them distort a bit. I had the subwoofer off so I can hear just my speakers, and have done this before using the cheap speaker wire I had and never had the heavy-bass-distortion problem. Not having tone controls on my preamp (I see that as a good thing), what do some of you guys use as a cut-off?

I would run the speaker wire to the subwoofers speaker terminal ins/outs from the amp and out to the speakers because it provides a high-pass output that cuts frequencies of 125hz and below off but that's just running alot of extra speaker wire and I'm probably losing quality/power that way.

    Any suggestions?

Here's the wire, yes I know it's entry-level but it definitely sounds better than anything else I've had.

    No takers huh?

I even considered one of those RCA plugs that are used for car applications but was worried about a loss of sound quality even if it is a very short connection. Or would I run into any issues IE gain loss/distortion/etc. I'm not running anything fancy as you can tell by my setup but the speakers are extremely revealing and everything sounds beautiful thus far.

I always thought to myself maybe something of a mod to the crossover with a different capacitor or something.

I looked on ebay and found nothing, although I did find a very old article that mentions a Maggie Mate and they said it's just that.....a capacitor.

Hmm, is this something of a DIY or something I'd have to look for and buy from someone?

Btw, thanks for the suggestion Mark since I didn't realize there was such a "fix" for my "issue" :)

The fix is to add a simple cap array to null out the lower frequencies. You can DIY if you want...totally up to you.

That's sweet although I was hoping to find some kind of schematic or the sort. I know others can probably find out how to create a "hi-pass" module for Maggies from scratch but I don't have the tools or the know-how :p

I'll look into buying the one for smaller Maggies. I do plan on getting a newer pair if they come up locally and are not over-priced, but plan on sticking with the "smaller" series so this module would last me for awhile.

    Again thanks Mark!

That was the same thing I expieenced on my carver amazings. Ribbons are just smooth sounding but wont hit concert ear splitting levels but, they will not fatigue you at all. The more you listen to them, the more detain you hear. A few of my friend heard the ribbons vs my SDA1.2 and liked the 1.2 bettter because they were more "in your face" but for me, it depends on the music.

I was just worried about the long speaker wire runs, the fact that the hi-pass filter was designed for 8-ohm speakers (on the plateamp) and loss of SQ and such if I hooked it up through my sub.

Anyway, I'm thinking since this little 'module' is being shipped from CA I might just take the sub out and work on it some more.

I've never heard a pair of Carver Amazings, but I can relate to your experience. These Maggies do NOT fatigue you at all, if anything I find myself always leaving my stereo on...even if I'm walking about and doing other things.

Alot say I got them for a really good price, while one says I paid too much.....doesn't bother me but I think that if I'm going to do any x-over mod/redo that it'll be done with a pair of SMG's/MMG's. Seeing as how they are newer than my series it makes sense to put the $ into those, plus it'd be easier to find any documentation regarding such mods/tweaks. Although if I can't find another pair in the next couple of weeks or so I'll go ahead and tear these suckers up and dig into them :D

    Detailed highs?

    Greater clarity at all volumes?

Dynamics improved, bass tightened up all while giving the soundstage even more depth.

That's what I can say about the RCA clear top side getters I received from Chuck. I'm falling in love with my setup all over again, and I'd have to thank Ted as well for the MIT's and the rest of Polk forum because my system sounds damn good for what I paid :D:D:D

Hey Mark, found a pair of MMG's locally and for CHEAP!

The guy has the owners manual/literature along with original boxes and such, he just doesn't like them at all and if he had an amp to properly power them he wouldn't like them anyway given his music tastes.

He will be bringing them by on a weekday so either tomorrow or next Monday. I'll update this and let everyone know how it goes. To think I just got my pair now I'm getting another, these things are damn addictive!

Got a chance to hear another import preamp that I would put in the category of entry-level tube pre's.

It's a Music Angel pre, whos design is based off the old Marantz MA-7 model. Comparing it to the Aric Audio, this thing just seems to be 'louder' and a bit more 'dynamic' sounding than the Aric. It utilizes 2x12ax7 tubes, 1x12au7, and a tube rectifier 1x6z3. Currently the ax7's are Russian Sovteks, the au7 is one of my RCA clear tops I threw in there and stock tube rectifier.

At first glance, this thing surprised me with it's size and weight. I really like the front wood panel with brushed knobs on the faceplate. A 'conservative' looking piece since I prefer having my tubes exposed but still clean looking nonetheless.

I'm really having fun with this thing, and don't find myself running out of volume at all. It has 3 inputs and 2 outputs all of which are RCA, and a detachable power cord if I ever really wanted to upgrade it. I can't wait to hear some different tubes in place of the ax7's to really hear this thing sing but altogether it sounds much better than the Aric.

Exposed pics to come of both the Aric Audio 3.7 and Music Angel.

Here's a pic of the front with top off (did not take this picture, friend did days before I picked it up to borrow).
