Sub Choice???

I am going to explain this the best that I can..
My couch sits on a home made sub BOX that stands 8 inches off the ground and measures 9'x8"x3' I love it and is a huge center piece of conversation when people come over. Well I'm tired of the way it looked and how high it raised the couch so I finally decided to do something about.
My living room is 29 x 20 with a small cove of 10 x 6 that meets the front door of my home.
When I had the hardwood floors put installed this weekend and I saw water damage on the sub floor and opted to replace it all, well because of the way the Joists are running and the fact that I can only place the couch in basically one spot because of windows and a fire place I decided to cut the joists, and frame a 9 x 5 section under where the couch sits to give me plenty of room for a under floor sub enclosure.
This is something I have always thought of doing but never could afford wanted the expense of doing it and these recent renovations have allowed me to negotiate that with my other half.
Basically once I pick out what subs I want to use I can design and insert a box under the floor and mount it. The enclosure can be just shy of 9 x 5 x 4 (which is huge) I want to build a box within these dimensions and install some subs. I'm a jack of all trades and a master of none so I don't know what subs to buy or how much room they will need to sound the best.
The couch stands about 6 inches off the floor on 4 legs. I can custom make a grill depending on specs of the box to meet flush with the hardwood and I will frame the grill in with threshold. I just got the sub floor framing done this weekend added new cinder block footers dropped in 20 cubic feet of concrete in the crawl space to add support to the 12x2's I cut into.
(The wife was worried that the floor would fall through because I cut it.)
I have it all planed out in my head, I just do not know what to choose for subs. I have always wanted to do this and here I am..
I'm getting a lot of advice and many many suggestions. What do you guys think?
