I would leave the cleartops in,,and switch to the 5751,, maybe trietz will chime in,cause when I sold my Anthem to him,,it had Brimar "drivers"and a 5751 but I don't remember the brand,, output tubes were winged "c" el-34's,, that setup was stellar,, just my .02. Have fun. How does it sound with the 1C's?

Thanks F1nut and George. I might have gotten lucky with the spares. I will try them out tonight.

George, the 1Cs are sounding great. I like what tubes are doing for me. My OCD has me checking the bias every couple of hours.

Keep throughing different albums on and can't find one that sounds bad.

Not sure I am allowed to say this yet but yatahay "Tubes Rule "

I went ahead and did a whole swap out. Sylvania 3 mica, D getter, black plate tube 5751 and the 2 Mullards.

So far I notice a little bit less bass but it sounds like just the right amount and the highs are a bit more forward and airy. Not sure if that is in line with what the swap should change but I like it. Subtle but noticable improvement, more refined. I am going to try some CDs next.

I was looking at this thread today because I got my resistors in for the tubes (10ohm 1watt) from Parts Express and they looked a little smaller than what I remember the stock resistors looking like. Currently at work so I can't compare them first hand right now so I was looking at pictures on the net to see.

Tracy I just noticed one thing and the reason I am bringing this up is I know you have recently just purchased another Amp-1. The 5751 you have in the picture above is actually an RCA TM BP D getter. You can tell by the octogon stop sign shape around the "5751" printed on the tube. RCA actually used this as part of their date codes for these tubes. There are breaks or areas that are not printed within the octogon and depending on where these breaks are, it signifies the date of manufacture. In my trials with tube rolling I found the RCA 5751 TM BP to be my very favorite tube in the input position for the Amp 1 with my system. The Sylvania TM BP 5751s are quite good also, I'm running a combo of them and the RCA 5751s in my pre, but I liked the RCA better in the input tube position on the Amp-1. Just my dos centavos.

Spiffy has the new Amp 1 I came across using E1 6CA7s from Jesse. He also has that RCA 5751 and clear top Au7s.

I never tried the RCA 5751s so I can not comment.

Spiffy is starting to roll some tubes in the Amp 1. He is also looking for a Anthem Pre2L if you come across one.

George, to answer your question 3 years later I preferred the Ei's over the Wing SED Cs.

The next Amp 1 I come across will be mine. Spiffy has just picked up a pair of 2Bs and was looking for a tube amp to power them so I passed the Amp 1 on to him.

His comment on the Ei vs the EL34s was he could actually feel the bass with the 6CA7s. He is happy.

Gotcha, I hope Spiffy is enjoying it. I have a set of EI EL34s that I tried briefly but not the 6CA7s. I've been running the Wing C EL34s pretty much since I bought it. One of the Wing Cs went out a couple of week ago and blew the resistor in the process. I just got the new resistors in today, so I'll be replacing all 4 of those and installing a new quad of Wing Cs. I might just have to try those EIs again instead. I also have new Mundorf caps on the way form Parts Connexion. I'm curious to see how it is going to sound with the changes.

Should make a nice improvement, I am sure the caps are tired by now. I dont think Spiffy has thought far ahead yet. I believe he is looking to upgrade his XO and do the TL mod.

He is a guy I work with and found out I am older than his father. Damn I am old. Thank god I think I am younger than my age.

I was looking at the thread and the picture of the 5751 and agree with Dawgfish. It is definately an RCA 3 mica 5751. You can tell by the octogon around the 5751 designation on the tube. Only RCA used this. IMO, this is the best 5751 (overall). I would recommend some better 12AU7's than the "clear top". Not that the "clear tops" are bed. But there are definately better out there. the "clear tops" are a little too bright and "brittle" sounding for my taste. Resolution is good however. As I recommended to you a while back, the Amperex 7316's are good. Along with (1950's) Mullard long plate 12AU7's.

BTW, if anybody is interested......I have two of these Anthem1 amplifiers that I no longer need. I have moved back into an SS amplifying section from Musical Fidelity. I haven't wanted to get rid of them because of the magic they can offer but it makes no sense to just keep them in the closet. One in silver and one in black.

I can't believe I'm about to post this...... *knocks self upon head hard*

Jesse I'm sorry I wasn't trying to be billy bad a$$ by pointing that out, I just thought that Tracy had bought another Amp-1 based off of a previous thread and if he was trying to get the same kind of sound out of it that he did before, he should go with an RCA TM BP instead.

Organ I'm in agreement with you, the RCA TM BP is my favorite 5751 also. As far as the driver tube 12AU7s, I have had very good luck running either RCA TM BP 5814s or CBS-Hytron BP 5814s in that position with the Amp-1. The CBSs are warmer sounding, but the RCAs have a lot more bass and mid-bass punch. I think they are a good match running with EL34s which many of you know can often lack punch.

Trietz3 I wish I would have known about the Amp-1s last week. I picked up a Rogue Magnum Eighty Eight while the Amp-1 is being reapired/modded, which frankly I'm loving, but it would have been sweet to have another Amp-1 to horizontally biamp my SRS 2s. Like I just said, I'm really digging the Rogue. I just got in a matched quad of NOS GE 6550As in for it yeasterday and I have to say that these things produce the best tube bass I have ever heard. Tight, plentiful, articulate, and punchy is the best way to describe the bass. I think I'm going to leave the Rogue in my work apartment system powering the SRS 2s and move the AMP-1 back to my home system powering the LSiM 703s. Should be a good fit. Anyways I'm rambling, but I may get in touch with you about one of those Amp-1s in the not to distant future if they are still available.

Enjoying them very much, still blown away by how much they changed the sound. And Tracy is right, hunting for a preamp to pair it with.
