Hello ,

The foam around one of the drivers in my RT3's got torn today. Is there a way to fix this?

Any help would be appreciated.
Amit.

FYI: Polk Speakers' surrounds are rubber not foam.

How bad is it? Do you notice it sonically, or is it just a cosmetic issue?

It is not only cosmetic. It is a nasty tear of about 2 inches long with splits at one end.

It was torn in a very demanding bass segment and now the sound is accompanied with flapping sound...

    Definately calls for a replacement.
    Polk won't ship internationally???

What MW# is it? pull out driver, should be label on side or back.
Put up a WTB thread here and also search on eBay. if Polk CS can't help you.

    Thank you ,kcoc321.

Do you mean a replacement of the whole drive? Isn't it possible to replace only the rubber? Doesn't Polk hold a stock of these?

Polk ships internationally but at a high cost. The unit is mw5805 (taken from here).

I believe Parts Express does sell replacement 'rubbers', is just a PIA...and it is not a guarantee to work as it relies you to perfectly center the cone....
But I guess it depends on what "high cost" means.

Did you tell CS you are a Forum member?
At least for US members they ship for free, plus a discounted price...

Where are you at, country wise?

Overpriced? A replacement Driver for my Mon 7's run $50 from Polk...so IDK if I would say over priced. Too bad this just came up....

Course, I just for fun checked Fedex to Germany (quessed) and "Economy" is $160 for a 5lb 8" box...damn

His price is more than I paid for both speakers together :) but I am aware spares might cost more.

1.Is it possible to get a replacement from polk : surrounding rubber or driver?

2.I have ran these speakers with t-amp for quite a while. Is a lack of power can cause such effects?

3.I have read on the internet different about methods of mending such tears with rubber cement or liquid electrical tape. Would these hold to the rubber of these speaker surrounds?

I have never seen anyone repair a torn surround. Just guessing but I would say it probably will change the sound (how much?) dues to not being as compliant in the area of the repair. Also doubt it will hold last long due to the movement/vibration.

That being said it's no good as is give it a try. It might do ok until you have time to find what you need at a reasonable price for you.

Good luck and welcome to CP

Wow, I've never heard about anyone tearing a rubber surround on a speaker. Now I'm kinda curious to know what very demanding bass segment did this to your speaker????

I think it was an electronic track of Rei Harakami when I noticed the flapping sound first . Definitely not worth the loss of the speaker...

I still wonder if the fact that a very weak amplifier was connected didn't cause this stress to the speaker.

I hear you amitri, not worth losing a speaker. I checked out some of R.H. on Youtube, some of it kinda reminded me of Tomita with all of the electronics. If you can't find someone near you who can possibly repair the rubber surround hopefully you can find a replacement driver in the EU like on their Ebay or something.

I have just seen a sale of mw5806 . Is it a completely different driver than the 5805 of the rt3?

Thank you for all the help.

I'll try to mend them first. If that doesn't hold or sound change is apparent I will search for alternatives.
