Sorry, but I had to share this.

It's the irony of the blue states that make want to laugh, cry and scream, all at the same time:rolleyes:

Yeah, saw that. We complain about kids being lazy, over weight, then deny them the right to walk or ride a bike. If this is such a safety issue,if it is that bad that you have to deny this basic right, then one can only assume that the friggin' school is in the wrong place.Blame the city planners. Some places reduce traffic flow around schools or reduce speed limits. But to tell a kid he can't walk or ride a bike is just nonsense.

Back when I was in school in the 60's & 70's we always rode our bikes to school. I could get to school in less time by bike than by car (using the bike paths). As a matter of fact we went everywhere on our bikes. Hopefully the school board see's the light.....and starts using some common sense.

It's stupid, but you can't blame the school board too much; it's the lawyers. Some kid gets hit riding his bike to school, some crazy parent sues the school for allowing it to happen, and what can the school do but try and prevent being sued again?

    Tort. Reform.

Side note : that could be the most confusingly written headline I've ever seen. "New York Mom Fights Middle School That Banned Her Bike Rides With Son" Bah?

I think this quoted passage from the article in the op sums up why we are in the mess we are in today.

"Since Marino's concerns first went public in May, the school board has been considered her appeal but has been slowed by bureaucratic gridlock, organizing a transportation safety committee to advise a school board policy committee to advise the school board itself, which is expected to consider the bike policy at an Oct. 13 board meeting."

A committee to advise a committee to advise the school board.

Now that's efficient and very responsive.

I think it is stupid that we keep hearing about the 'green agenda', but when someone actually tries to do it, they get slapped in the face with stupidity.

We can't put up windmills because they MIGHT kill bats.

We can't put solar panels in the desert, because it'll ruin the 'natural beauty' of the landscape?! It's a friggin DESERT!

A man in MA buys an electric car, but can't register it, because it doesn't meet the state SAFETY STANDARDS?

And this kid want's to ride his bike to school, but NO, he must get on a vehicle with NO emission standards, that gets 8 MPG?

I don't think 'bi-polar disorder' is a neurological problem, but one that is INDUCED by society.

Shoot, I rode my bike to Elementary school, Intermediate school and High school. In fact, come to think of it, I rode my bike to College as well.

I would fight this one tooth and nail with a "zero tolerance" for stupidity.

Yes, but that's in Saratoga Springs.

If any of you have actually been to the town, you'll know that there are a LOT of curvy and winding country roads outside of the town and it's quite dangerous to share the road on a bike with cars going by 30-45 miles an hour.

Did you watch the video? OMG, that woman who is saying 3rd graders can't be trusted or are unable to walk or ride bikes to school? PUHLEEEEEEEEEEESE! I rode my bike from first grade on, and in high school I rode 8 miles to school instead of riding the bus (not every day, but some). How did any of us live to adulthood without our elected "nannies" to watch over our every (non)decision for us?

edit--> and appadv, my ride was in rural NY also, on a state highway with a speed limit of 55. FWIW

Well, I live in what some of you may consider the bluest of the blue, and the worst of the worst, but here in our quiet L.A. community there is actually a bicylce rack in front of the school for students to park their bikes in. I'm not sure what the policy is, but it's clearly not prohibited.

As others have mentioned before, in this and other threads, liability issues are becoming a big factor in everyday life in this country, including the cost of insurance etc.

I'm not sure what NY being a blue state has to do with local government. FYI, the Mayor, Scott T. Johnson, is a fiscally conservative Republican and Conservative Party member. In fact, if one were to generalize, upstate NY is one of the more Conservative areas in the USA.

This is an example of a bad law made from good intentions, and enforced by mediocre bureaucrats with no common sense. Fix the law.

I think this is the best assessment of the situation. Common sense today seems to be frozen, like the deer in headlights :(

As stated earlier, tort reform to put some common sense back into the law. Instill in our children the ability to make decisions on right & wrong. :) If that school route is dangerous, a child with well armed decision making capability will see the danger. Others will figure it out the hard way.

It might be a dangerous route but its still just a school rule so that means its on school property, it will never hold up in court.

Kind of getting off subject but I agree with you about bikers on major winding roads. I live right off a major route that has no shoulders with speed limit of 45 and these stupid **** bikers take up a whole lane even during rush hour causing people to slam on their brakes and creating traffic jams. I bike all the time in that area and can easily find ways around riding on that route.. its like they ride on the road just to piss people off... and it works!

With your title, and your thinly concealed party politics descriptor 'blue state', you are way over the line and inciting political argument.

I've switched the 'blue state' in your quote to what it designates.

We've been able to maintain decorum here, and we do discuss things that have inherent political overtones, but are capable leaving the party politics out of it, so that we can continue to do so. You, it seems, are not mature enough to do that, or are deliberately trying to cause trouble.
