...but check with your school's IT department, a lot of them have microsoft products for free.
I'm curious whether they'll have the same "upgrade" work-around on W7 so you can do a clean install from an unlicensed prior copy.Gallo Ref 3.1 : Bryston 4b SST : Musical fidelity CD Pre : VPI HW-19

It would be nice to just plug in the COA, and have it work. I'm running RC1, and have it tweaked the way I want it, and have been using it on my main business laptop for a few months. I did have to reinstall once, which took about 40 minutes total, but that was due to dropping the laptop while running which damaged a sector of the HD. Otherwise, I've only had a small issue with the shutdown process, which is minor and mobile specific. Stellar for an RC1. I know it's bad form, but, good job Microsuck!
Edit: Those Newegg prices are system builder OEM licenses. Would I have a problem with one of these if I wanted to install it on one machine, then uninstall it, then reinstall it on another? In short, would it still be fairly portable?-Ignorance is strength - -

OEM licenses are for 1 machine only, you are not supposed to ever move it to another machine. Retail copies can be moved.
Now I will wait for all the responses of those who have moved OEM copies without a problem. Doesn't matter, still against the license agreement. -
Meh my 5 year old mac is still kicking and will be replacing it with another mac. Once you go mac you never go back. Also one thing to think of the earlier vista shipped computers have encryption on the motherboards so it is going to be difficult to upgrade to 7.HT setup

I don't understand the whole price/tier system of Windows OS.
Home? Work? Pro? Ultimate? SuperFantasticAngryFistOfGodMode?
If you buy any but the highest price, you know you could, possibly miss out on some feature that the next tier up has, and if you buy the most expensive, you know you overpaid.

I found this comparison to be help full. One item most important to me is the XP emulator, since I will be using/ keeping most of my other programs (Autocadd, Cheif Architect ect..)
Look like Pro and above have it.

Thanks Will, and kcoc. I forgot about the XP vm feature, and didn't download it separately to try it out. Looks like I've got some playing to do.-Ignorance is strength -

I've been a mac guy since the dying days of OS9 and welcomed OSX in.
Great machines. Great workhorses even when they are dated.
I had an old cheap eMac that only had 256RAM and a 700mhz processor and it would churn large Photoshop CS files all the way through... And CS was supposed to run on a gig of RAM and 1ghz processor.
It might take awhile, but it would do that while I was working on my other computer.
Even now, I use my mac mini as my music server while doing any work-at-home and surfing the net.

Mod on another forum said, at least for XP, that Microsoft only keeps data for about 6 months.
They may change that policy with Windows 7, but my guess is that if last activation was over 6 months ago, you should be ok. YMMV.

No, Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. It runs faster than Vista and XP. Unlike ME or Vista, Windows 7 is worth the trouble to upgrade. I've been running the Beta > Release Candidate since last winter.

Encryption on motherboards? Where do you Mac fan boys come up with this stuff?
I have test systems here that I have installed almost every operating system on, and have had no issues with upgrading from Vista to 7.
Of course I haven't installed any Mac OS, as our users actually need to be able to get some work done. -

I was going to call BS on that, but I figured it was better just to ignore it.
But since it was brought up again, lets be clear. There is no such thing as motherboard encryption. Windows 7 will install on any PC that meets the hardware requirements, regardless of what OS was installed previously. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -
I'm going to put Windows 7 on my Mac....now what?!?!

Now there is a bold idea!
I am at a loss to understand why Mac users with no interest in Win7 would post in a thread titled "[News] Windows 7 Full OEM pricing revealed at Newegg (available for pre-order, too)"

I'd be interested because it would let me play games again I hope it's not like Vista though, I hated all the weird new GUI crap they added with Vista. I'm sure you guys running the professional versions have that turned off though.

Careful with the generalizations.
I used to have 2 Macs + 5 PC's on 24/7. Then 1 Mac + 5 PC's. Now the 1 Mac is on, but rarely used and I have 3 teens, my wife and a 21 year old in the house.VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

I have macs, linux boxes and windwos 7 RTM boxes (MSDN Member) they all work good, and they all have their own little issues, but I like them all. I'm sure I would never be happy locked into just one platform. I like and hate them all at the same time...
If you like what you using, great, if you don't like what someone else is using, that's great too, but calling people names for their OS choice is kind of pointless isn't it? What do you really accomplish by doing so? It's all just opinion in the end... The mac vrs. windows debate has been going on for years all over the Internet, do we really need to drag into an audio forum too?
Just my $.02 worth.

My first comment was directed at you.
My second comment was directed at the "my mac is so cool" postings that add exactly nothing to this thread.
I actually like the GUI, it was the driver problems and random "hitchy-ness" that Vista suffered from that I found unusable. Windows 7 is far and away better and perhaps the best thing MS has ever done. It is very stable, customizable, and feature rich.
Highly recommended and your Mac hardware will run it like a scalded dog.-Kevin

My impression is that older hardware runs faster with newer OS X releases.
That obviously can't be said for Windows, particularly Vista. Windows 7 RC1 still requires fairly power computing parts to run snappy, but is apparently much better than Vista (only used XP, never Vista). -
I enjoy the challenge of keeping several platforms up and running. The Mac's iPhoto, IVideo, iDVD and of course, iTunes are certainly nice pieces of software to have around.VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S

Congratulations. That is the absurd statement of the day. -
I would have to agree... There is no reason to bring up Mac in a windows 7 $$ post. So my post and the Mac post add nothing the the original topic.
My bad...
