That's rough, and it sounds like many people understand what you are going through. Try not to let it hinder your outlook, stay as possitive as you can, and do what you feel you need to do. I'm not saying that to sound all cliche, but bigger stress means physical health problems, so try your damnedest to stay productive and positive; you've got your health and a swarm of people have said you've got a good head on your shoulders.

Hey guys, thanks for all the positive feedback. Like many have said, I'm just gonna file for unemployment, kick back for a week or two and try my hardest to figure out what exactly I want out of life. Don't get me wrong, in those two weeks I will be positive in my job search but as it stands right now, I'm hoping all my contacts I've made over the years will be able to help a brother out. My mother-in-law is the main accountant for the Navy, basically, she gives the navy the permission to spend as they do, if the paper work never leaves her desk, they can't spend it. She apparently set up a meeting with the head engineer in her department yesterday for tomorrow and she's trying to get me in to see/speak with him sometime next week. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Other than that, with everything going on in the last couple of months the wife has been really stressed out with her job and all. My biggest challenge right now is trying not to show her my worries and stress. We had a heart to heart over the weekend and I acknowledged to her how worried I was about being laided off. Yeah, it's hurt's that this is the first time EVER being laid off but no so much that I lost my job, just the fact that I have a wife and two kids that I have to worry about. My daughter really looks up to me and to see the look of concern in her face when I explained to her yesterday what happened hurt me more than when I was told I was being laid off. Tomorrow I'm gonna spend the day contacting all my debtors as well as my mortgage company to see if there isn't something they can do to help me out for a while until I can get back on my feet. For the most part, right now all I can do is take it one day at a time. I'm bound and determined that a) I'm going to keep a positive attitude about this whole situation and continue to be the backbone of my family, b) I'm gonna do everything I can to keep a roof over my family's head, utilities in my house as well as food on the table and c) consider this a learning experience and learn from some of the mistakes I've made over the years.

Sorry to hear that brother, I've been there before back when 9-11 hit, just proposed to my wife, just bought a house, all prep done for the wedding when the D-day hit. OMG, almost cancelled the wedding coz I grew up from a old school tradition, the MAN is the provider...etc...etc..etc. Still recovering up to now but GOD has provided me other things in life, more significant than anything else including myself, careerwise. I have beautiful family! I am pretty sure you heard of this before, there's always a light at the end of the tunnel.....may be not the kind of light you want to see but something different and much better.

    GODspeed to you bro.

sorry to hear about the sad news. I was also laid off last 7/27 and has been collecting unemployment benefit from the state. don't know about Va but here in Ca, we can file for the benefit online which is a lot faster than mailing the application. I'm sure your company already gave you info about this, I suggest you do it ASAP. Good luck!!

Truer words were never spoken !!

When the male of the species loses his job, it is almost guaranteed that he feels that he's lost a big part of his identity.
Doesn't make it right, but that's the way it is.

You have an opportunity, using the "It's ALL Good If You Let It" theorem, to demonstrate not only to yourself, but to your family, that you're more than just your job.
They probably already know that (Surprise !) but, being a male, it is an opportunity for you to learn that, too.

Plug n' chug, do what you can, and let The Big Guy Upstairs (pat.pending) work out the rest of the details.

Grimster, checkout "USAJOBS.GOV". I just did a preliminary search, and found 571 jobs in VA, under the 'Engineering and Architecture' job descriptions. The website is mostly for federal and ex-military/ retirees, but it's worth a shot?
    Good luck

Sucks man, but the holiday season is coming up, so you might pick up some work because of that =)
