Holy @&%$ - Can't believe my wife just approved this speaker purchase

Since I upgraded to the RTA 11TL's, I needed a new center channel. My wife did NOT know this when I bought it. After I just sold what I had, she asked about it and I jumped on it. I gave her two options, between the CS400 and the CS350. The 400 is more expensive, but it's the one I want. Here's what I did :) I told her that the CS350 would have to go in front of the TV because it didn't fit on the shelves. The CS400 could be conveniently located under the TV (I know not ideal, but whatever), so she'll never have to see it. There's a picture of the stand in this post: http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=88585. I will be taking out the shelf that the CS1 sat on, so the speaker can fit height wise. It should squeeze in there perfectly otherwise. I told her it was more expensive, but, "Think of the other speaker being right in front of the TV, all our guests looking at it and commenting on it. And our daughter (Who's not yet two) would love to bang it and play with it. It would just be safer to get the CS400". I showed her pictures, and it was approved. It was a close one though (You should have seen her face when I began the conversation with, "We have to talk about something" and she replied, "Speakers?"

I'll pick it up tonight! Any comments on how the placement of the speaker below the TV will affect the sound. I had my CS1 down there, and I didn't htink it was too bad.

Do you mean that the TV will sit on top of the center speaker ? Had that center at one time and it's a damn good one for sure, you'll be a happy camper. IMHO though, look into a different stand,if money is tight, you could probably make a decent one for pretty cheap. Don't forget that idea of yours will raise the height of the TV quit a bit too.

Sorry I was unclear. If you look at the picture, the CS 1 is basically a foot below the TV on a shelf. Underneath the CS1 was a spot for books. Basically I will be removing the shelf the CS1 was on and making it one big area for the speaker. I will have to find another place for all the Dora the Explorer books. Hopefully it won't sound too bad down there, but it has to be a HUGE improvement to the CS1, and should sound fab with the RTA 11TL's.

got that part, just wondering if you can remount the shelf just low enough to fit the new center while keeping it as close to the tv as possible - vs it being almost on the floor.

Junior - that's impossible. The shelf thats above the CS1 in the pic is part of the main load bearing shelf. In the future, it may be possible to mount the TV on the wall and place the Center where the TV now stands. The problem is the wall behind attaches to the garage, and I don't think there's many studs behind that area. I guess I'd have to get lucky. I'd haate to mount it there and have it fall :( Just thinking there may be about 2 inches of extra room on teh bottom where I can at least prop up the front of the speaker to angle upwards. May help :)

sounds like that may be your only short term choice. maybe make a little stand for it to give it a little height and angle it upwards? nice looking setup btw.

I am pretty confident that the studs in the wall follow the standard 16" on center guidlines, so the wall should be ok supporting the tv, and it will make hiding the wires inside the wall a bit easier.

From the picture, the shelf is adjustable, using peg type shelf brackets. Just redrill a set of new holes. Easy-peazy.

Hints: I would make a little template with a scrap of thin wood (1/4") so you drill all exactly the same height. Also use tape on the bit so you don't drill too deep.

PS: Good job on presenting your case to the wife.

How about something like this to sit the speaker on or build one of your own as SJ suggests.

I will have about 5 3/8 inches of spare room in the bottom. I think my best bet may be to prop something under the front of the speaker to angle it up. Thanks for the comments and compliments -

Oh my...I LOVE my new CS400. It sounds FANTASTIC with the RTA 11TL's. I just hooked it in, and put on Kill Bill Vol. 1 - the fight scene near the end with the Crazy 88's. It is like night and day compared to the CS1/Monitor 50's. I really feel like I have a FANTASTIC system. I will upload pictures later tonight...the in laws just got here. Thanks to everyone for the advice.

And Kcroc - Thanks for the advice on those shelf raisers. That sounds like a great idea I think...something the wife may even go for for a bit of money :)

Ha! I told ya! Glad you got it.

BTW, those Ikea feet that were recommended above: not only do they look pretty darn good, but they come from the kitchen department, and will therefore hold something like 200lbs or more. They also cost next to nothing, and have height adjustment capabilities built in.

    Best of luck!
