Anyone have experience with Shure noise cancelling ear-buds...like the SE110 thru SE530?
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I have the SE310 headphones. The sound is phenomenal even without an amp. In fact, I got them because the iPod can easily drive them. The bass is good, but not full can bass. The mids are very good as well. I liken the sound quality to my Sennheiser HD555. The best part is clearly the noise cancelling via the white in-ear plugs; however, the white plugs need to be washed of wax every few days if used constantly, and replaced after a year or so. Shure cancels much more sound than Bose or other electronic noise-cancellers.

Maybe you should wash your ears.

I've had a pair of the Shure E4C's for a couple years, and have literally used them daily. I use the flanged tips, and they certainly do block out external noise, (something like a 25 Db rating?) and the barrel design may be what gives them a thunderous bass response, very efficient. You really get that bass buzz through your body on music that's mastered for it- have to feel it to believe it.

However, what really chapped my **** began a few days ago with the left channel going out. ( They do have something like a 3 year warranty, but mine are past)
Turns out the cable, which is very stiff, is not molded to the earbud body. It's threaded in, so it apparently has worked loose like the cheapies do.
I jammed the cable on up into the bud, and the audio came back. I'll probably superglue it there where it inserts, and hope for the best.

As I mentioned, the cables on mine are stiffer than I like. Also, these do not have an add-on connector or a volume scroll pod, both of which so-called features I dislike.

Sennheiser, otoh, make cables that are very supple, and while their IE series are comparable in quality ( and pricey too), the CX300 are a steal.

The Shures are best for noise-cancellation, no contest, in my limited experience. You don't want to be driving with these things. Long airplane flights, highly recommended.

Also, they are worth the price that one time you're shopping where someone else's idiot child is screaming. Everyone else in a 30-yard radius but you will be suffering.

p.s. My dap's, which I've mentioned elsewhere, are Rio Karmas, 5-band EQ, lossless flac, gapless, etc. so I can't comment on how they'd sound with an iPod.

I went ahead and picked up a pair of SE530...hopefully they'll be just what I need.

    Thanks Mike and John!

Man, I've been wanting those so bad. I love these little in ear thingies. Will you please let us know what you think after you've listened and worn them for a while. What are you using them for? Any external amp?

Just my iTouch for now but I'll see how they are in a regular rig and head-amp. I liked the design of 3individual drivers instead of a single driver. I'm excited.

I think I'm going to pick up another Consonance Cyber20....I miss the one I had ages ago. Who's the Polkie who knows Stephen Monte well?....Is it Victor?

The Klipsch Custom 2's I bought for $80 brand new from Guitar Center ($200 MSRP) block a ton of noise. Probably 90% of the plane background noise, not to mention voices and such. You have to shove them in farther than you think for full bass, but if they aren't seated deeply for bass, they still block a lot of noise. They are also smooth, but still detailed on top, definitely not fatiguing. I just couldn't justify the $$$ for the 530's.

The iPod spends 99% of its time hooked up to the main rig, so no matter how good they sound, very hard for me to justify.

For full disclosure, I rip everything to ALE and like to hit shuffle on my iPod. This lets me hear a goodly portion of my collection, and still sound good enough for fun, casual listening. I have CA 840C CDP for serious listening.

Just ordered the Ultimate Ears Triple.fi 10vi last night and was looking at those Shures as well as the Klipsch X10s since I use my headphones with my phone every day for commute and at the gym 6 days a week. They also utilize the triple armature design for the three different drivers and the bonus for me was the inline microphone and button for operating the phone.

Let me know how you like the Shures because I was seriously considering them.

Etymotic makes good stuff too. My Dad is losing his hearing and required a way to hear the other person on his cell phone while working on job sites and around heavy equipment. I got him these in-ear phones that double as a microphone for an iPhone or Blackberry.

They sound excellent with the time I've tried them out.

My Dad actually got a little choked up when he discovered with these things he could actually hear clearly again.

looks like there are several complaints about the wires cracking, but the reviews seem older and no idea how that applies to current run......i like the idea of separate drivers as well, but when you take that one and split it up those things have got to be tiny as hell..wonder how 'big' the stage is.....

I pulled mine apart yesterday, and found that they knot the wire inside the chamber, so if it's frayed or broken inside the knot, I can slide it up, snip, and carefully re-solder.

Been using the UE Triple.fis for the past two days and I am still not over how incredible they sound even running off of my phone. So much detail while not becoming fatiguing, super accurate even at high volumes with the weak phone amp. I am hearing things in recordings that I could only slightly hear even on my studio monitors. Each and every time I put them on I can't help but smile, their audio quality is simply stunning.

They finally came via FedEx....excellent product. By far the best ear buds I've owned and the kicker....uber comfortable. It looks like my Sennheisers will be collecting dust for a bit.

Didn't work. Must be frayed further up, maybe at the yoke. Glad I got a bug to get some Sennheiser IE7's a month ago.

JR.com had the Senn CX300 on sale this week for 16, so I got a pair as backup.
