Veneer them so they blend in with the room better?

I say you build around them great speakers! After you are done take a picture of the whole setting like the one above, then recloth the grills in white, take the newly reclothed grills and the picture to a tattoist or good spray painter, and have them spray-paint the grills to blend in with the bookshelf!! :) A good painter would have no problem painting in some books and the cross shelving to match! Crazy but just might work...
Most of them only hear how loud it sounds, and the rest of us hear everything else -

There is a guy up north of me that has a pair of RTA11T cabinets in brown for $60. Maybe I could try it with those. That is a neat idea about painting the grills or at least color coordinating.

Book cases are dust magnets and will make the room look more cluttered.

That is pretty good. Thanks for doing this for me. It gives a nice visual of how it could be done and my wife just may like it.

    Thanks

I have determined that Monitor 5A's belong on stands. They sound much better on stands than on the bookshelf. Why do they call them bookshelf speakers anyway? Is there a speaker that would sound good on a bookshelf? LSi9?

On top of a bookshelf may be ok if it's away from the wall. Too close to the wall or in a bookshelf and it'll sound muddy and/or boomy due to boundary effect.

Someone offer me a deal I can't refuse for the Monitor 5A's. That way I'll sell them and have no replacement for the RTA's.

I don't know how the low end will compare between the two, but LSi's are a better speaker overall.

It's a more balanced loudspeaker. The LSi9 doesn't impress me given it's design.

well 7's are only 10.25"deep, so they would fit in a shallower cabinet.......while 9's are only a little bit deeper than the RTA-11's @ 15" deep.

BIM thou that they only go down to 53hz or 50hz for the 9's

There are the SDA-SRS bookshelf model that come around every once in a while. If you get a line on some of the bookshelf A/D/S, grab them.

I must have the best wife in the world, as she loves these speakers better than my smaller high-end speakers.
You have to join in with her and become and interior designer of sort, to make the large cabinets look small in your living space, as we did in the attached photo.
