Damn shingles...

Had a slight back/side pain since Saturday; didn't pay much attention because on Friday our son moved to his dorm and I helped carry some boxes; thought it was just some muscle thing....but it grew worse and moved internally, and today I felt really bad; even breathing hurt, so I decided to go have it checked. The nurse looked at my back and she laughed. There I was concerned that I had something in my lungs and she said "it's just shingles". I had not noticed the rash..

It hurts like hell. Anyone else had it?

You should ask about getting steroids, too. Taken early on, it can help a lot with the post-Herpetic neuralgia. Wait too long and they won't do much good.

I had a mild case a couple years ago. Luckily little discomfort and no neuralgia, knock on wood.

Shingles can be attributed to stress. They can happen at any age.

Thanks for the reminder... I'd forgotten to go out and take a look at my roof. Found some shingle pieces on a porch roof below the main earlier today. Got out the binoculars... looks like I'm losing shingles at an alarming rate :(.

I'm only 27 and had shingles a few years ago. I was always very healthy and in great shape, but I had a rash around my lower back/side. Went to the doctor and he said the only thing he thought it could be was shingles, but odd for someone my age. About a month later I went home to visit family and no longer had shingles, but wasn't feeling right for a while. Going to the bathroom all the time, thirsty, vision was good one day and not the next. I asked my dad to check my blood sugar because he's diabetic, so is my sister. Long story short...blood sugar was really high, went to ER, was told I was a type 1 diabetic and had to take insulin daily in order to live. I believe that was the reason for the shingles, the stress my body was going through from becoming diabetic. Be careful that everything else is ok! And having to get a prescription filled for Valtrex when your 25 does NOT look good to the cute girl working in the pharmacy. They assume herpes, not shingles...at least it seemed that way! Hope you feel better.

Hate to break it to you, but shingles IS herpes. Herpes Zoster, the same virus that causes chicken pox.

I had that shite in h.s., and did it SUCK! I was out of school for almost 3 weeks.
I had it on my groin/ thigh area, and that was NASTY!
IIRC, it's a form of the herpes virus, that's emitted from the lower spine, and once you get it, you'll never get it again, like detergent poisoning dermititus, which I ALSO had!:(

That antiviral thingie is probably VALTREX. You know, the same drug they give you when after you start itching down there.

I got shingles on my right leg/knee area around January. It didn't really hurt that much, it was a dull pain that I just ignored and put this weird cream on.

Only if you had chickenpox. It's triggered by a weak inmune system, stress, and it usually appears after you're 50. I read 50% of all cases happen to people over 60.

I know it's herpes, but not the kind that everyone thiniks of when they hear that word. When you're 25 and getting herpes meds at the pharmacy, usually people don't think that you have shingles.

If you have nowhere to go, ask for Lyrica. It's for nerve pain and is sometimes prescribed for shingles. It does a pretty good job, but don't expect to be able to function otherwise.

Yup, you can only get it if you had chicken pox...and you can give a kid chicken pox if you come into direct contact with them when you have shingles. Nasty stuff...both of my best friends in like 2nd/3rd grade got chicken pox...so my mom loaded up on medicine, but I never got them...and still havent, thank god. I also got the 'lifetime' chicken pox vaccination, which is supposed to be 70-90% effective, but still extremely new.

It's a tough one to swallow, isn't it? Biggest pill I've ever taken. I almost thought it was a suppository.

I still have some of the pills at home along with some immune system suppressant...

I was 26 and was getting valtrex from the pharmacy... yes it's weird.

This **** is bad. Looks like the rash stopped growing, but the pain is still there. The problem is that you can't tell where it hurts. It's all over, not in the skin but inside.

A friend told me he had it for 8 weeks :eek:

Be careful with the shingles, my son got it in his eye and nearly lost all vision in it. They are still trying to figure out how to repair it.
