If you could choose between only Oppo & Denon, which manufacturer "blu-ray" would you choose?

I would take the Oppo for so many reasons. First off I don't care for Denon anymore due to poor quality. I however like the Oppo very much. I have installed one and was very impressed.

I'd pick the Oppo without hesitation. It will play more formats and is a fraction of the cost. Add in the fact that Denon disc players have had a very poor reliability record the last few years, and it's an easy decision.

I must admit that the Denon is a much better looking player, never have liked the looks of any of the Oppo players.

I own both brands. My hearty recommendation goes to the Oppo.
    SRT For Life; SDA Forever!

    The SRT SEISMIC System:
Four main satellite speakers, six powered subs, two dedicated for LFE channel, two center speakers for over/under screen placement and three Control Centers. Amaze your friends, terrorize your neighbors, seize the audio bragging rights for your state. Go ahead, buy it; you only go around once.

You need the Denon DVD-A1UDCI player. It is reviewed in this month’s Home Theater.

While basic BR playback is on par with the Oppo, in regard to audio the review says “However, over its analog audio outputs, the Denon is far more singular. It smashes the sound quality of the Oppo and every other BD player I’ve yet heard by a degree that’s nothing short of astonishing……On the Denon the jump from CDs to SACDs expanded as well. The difference in clarity and detail when the higher resolution disks were spinning wasn’t just noticeable, it was dramatic” page 30, Home Theater October 2009.

The Denon Blu-Ray has great video performance and also is very strong on audio. I think the Opps is beter value but for pure performace on Blu-Ray I still like Denon (non Blu-Ray and I am all over Oppo)

Well I'm all for great audio performance, but keeping something in my wallet was a huge factor in choosing the Oppo. I guess if I never hear the Denon, I'll remain a very happy camper.

    "...Conclusion
Finally, here’s a standalone Blu-ray player that truly offers the complete experience. The BDP-83 is a reference video and audio transport regardless of the format you throw at it. But it’s also the most user-friendly standalone player I’ve had the pleasure of using. While some players provide outstanding performance in certain areas, the Oppo never hiccupped in any department. It’s truly the most complete package of a Blu-ray player I’ve yet reviewed. It’s now my standing reference as a source component and one that should be on your short list, regardless of your budget..."

Since Blu-Ray players just take the digital signal off the disc and send it out via HDMI, how would the Denon outperform the Oppo in any way with BD discs? Or for that matter, the $150 players at Best Buy?

Only difference I've been able to see between BD players, is there ability to scale standard DVD's, and of course some play more formats than others.

Well, you are exactly correct about BD playback. However, most of us have an extensive DVD collection. For us, the upscaling/deinterlacing capability of the player makes a huge difference in PQ. The Oppo is stellar in this regard and the analog output section is pretty good. The 2ch analog section is really good.
Honestly, I use my BDP-83 for 2ch analog far more than I use it for video playback.

Ah, I was taking you out of context. My bad.

The Denon is reportedly a slug on load times as well. The analog section is the only advantage I can see that it has. And for someone with that kind of cash to spend on a UDP, it may well be worth it.

    I don't and it ain't. ;)

How much does that Denon cost? $2000 or $4500? For that money you can build a 7.1 surround speaker system from Polk and still have enough left over to buy the Oppo.

My Oppo BDP-83 is amazing. Can't imagine getting a better image and I also think the audio performance is fantastic. My SAcd's sound unbelieveable on it. I have not had the Denon, so can't speak to it, but I would be very hard pressed to believe there is $4,000 difference.

    Bernal,

Lots of info on stuff I have no idea what it is. From what I gather HDMI is pretty darn good at 98% while Component is not bad at 83%.

For me I would not be using HDMI but Component so are there other Blue Ray players that do better than 83% in Oppo's price range?

If I am not mistaken, the VRS chip is only active on the HDMI output. Is that correct?

In which case yes, there might be a more affordable option. That VRS chip is expensive to just be unused in a given setup.
