I want a Receiver

Well I suppose its just time to start thinking about updating the Reel Time Theater Rack, I need a used receiver from a trusted Polkie, guess I need to bite the bullet and get something with HDMI along with the ability to decode the HD formats now available, the later the version of HDMI I suppose the better and it needs to have pre-outs, for seven channels.
For common used pieces I typically pay 1/3 the cost of new. No Rush as my present reciever works fine, so if you are thinking about upgrading I can wait for an older unit.

I'm interesting in getting your Onkyo 787 avr, when you update this.
But I need to ask why, as your 787 seems to be a great pre/pro.

I would guess this part:
"get something with HDMI along with the ability to decode the HD formats now available" -
DJ7--I want to try the new movie sound formats, I want to hook my sat. up with HDMI as well and I bought a cheapie blu-ray thingy.
Shack--likely more than I want to spend, HT is lo-fi and I never listen to music on the Rig, sure the Lci are terrific but its still HT.
If I cant find one I will just wait some more, the TV picture already looks good on the Pioneer Elite and the sound on Dolby Digital/DTS is excellent. That DLP I had at the Fest was great but like many DLP the light engine took a major dump and failed so after some poor service from Mit, I just had my TV dealer give me something different, been very happy with the Pioneer plasma, I will end up with something like Matt had with a motor screen and projector for movies and the TV for sports, etc.

Hmm... I forgot about the HDMI thing on the older Onkyo avr, I wish to buy a fairly sweet avr to give it to another person for a gift. Without the HDMI I don't think it will work.

Think it over, is HT even worth the effort?

I've just updated an older yamaha 5.1 to an HK 7.2 that will do DTS and True HD, with pre-outs. 250 shipped.
I researched it quite a bit first, and it looks like there have been some HDMI compatability problems requiring firmware updates and specific source/AVR/display power-up orders, but I can work around it. These come with the latest firmware.
On fleabay search for the Harman audio store. -
Sorry, G, I gotta have 7.1, I mean if you going to do it........well, 7.1 or 7.2 for the twin Polk woofs.

I didn't mean to suggest or put forth my old Yamaha as a replacement, but rather a cheap alternative into 7.2 HD surround such as the AVR 254 available cheap on HK's ebay store.
I'm fiddling with mine now. Need some additional cabling before I can give an update on how it works in my application.
Good luck.

Greg may be right. Something like the HK AVR 247 might just be the ticket. Probably a decent pre for less than 4 bills...basically new. I would have no problems with a refurb and have owned several that have lasted for years. It seems to have all the bells and whistles...all the Dolby and DTS stuff, pre-outs, HDMI, etc...

Shack,
Would that do Blu Ray DVD audio?

The 254 does TruHD and DTS. Check the AVS forums or search for HK 254 HDMI compatability issues first, however, as a lot of units were returned because of old firmware. Supposedly the new firmware couldn't be updated to the most recent version because of "loader issues", so the refurb units had that done at the factory. I haven't been through all that yet with mine, but I'll let folks know if there are problems.
Greg -
But why go over to HK over a low end Elite Pioneer?
Also why did Pioneer drop the i-Link, it's only on the high end Elite what $7k, where you could find it in the 84 or 94 older Elite avr.

For me it was price. I've had HK products before, like the amp sections. The low end Pioneer Elite VSX-21TXH looks like a winner, as does the non elite VSX-819H-K at 300.

Bought a refurb H/K 347 ($225) and love it! Has the pre-outs and sounds much more powerful than the rated 55WPC....
