I think you are right about prior "protection mode" operation of a used unit.

I've got to believe that voltage spikes "work temper" (for lack of a better phrase) the metal elements used, ultimately diminishing the ability of the unit to protect.

Voltage spikes won't diminish the life of the unit (unless they are extreme). Hard lightening strikes will. MOV's are used to supress things like lightening strikes and those have a limited life cycle. It doesn;t matter if you have a cheap unit or expensive unit that uses MOV's as a supressor. Some of the really pricey units use something other than MOV's as a supressor and many times that's why they are 2-3X the cost. MOV's are prefectly acceptable........it's just after a couple direct hits they loose effectiveness and need to be replaced.

Still for me, during an intense storm I unplug the unit........no unit is 100% effective for a direct lightening hit.

Also another diffrence I like about the H15 is the digital display info. Voltage, Hz, Current draw and % current used vs. what's available in the unit.
