Calibration is key with all panels. I prefer LCD but I understand the love for the plasma's rich color and black level. Having said that I love my LCD (52" Philips). It looks better than any of my friends panels. By a mile. Why? Calibration disks and some tweaking. Took me a (quite) bit of reading and about one night of serious work.
The OP got a nice panel. The thing is, no matter what you buy, calibration is essential. Get a good calibration disk and get busy learning ;)
Also, there is absolutely no reason to compromise on a 720p display. There are good 1080 displays that are relatively cheap and HD sources are 1080. Why anyone would invest in a 720p these days escapes my logic.

It takes a little while to get used to a panel if you are accustomed to a crt. But once you do, you will never look back. Imho.

I have to disagree on this, well maybe not disagree, but look at it differently. At least with my eyes displays in the 42" class unless viewed from closer than the average distance look as good as 1080. If you are investing in a 42" and seating distance is 10' or more it escapes my logic why people are paying for the 1080. There are some great deals on 720s.

No kidding, I had 2 or 3 1080 50" TV's and took them all back in exchange for a 720. Go figure.

Thanks for all your input guys. I have tried everything on this set with the pro's at AVS and all their settings. I am still not happy with the result and will return the set. I am now looking at plasmas, so Sony is out by default.

It looks like Panasonic is the way to go so I may look at those. I did like the LED sets I saw at BB from Samsung, but they will still suffer from motion lag, or the soap opera 120hz fix. I was also told they are lit from the sides.
I will you guys posted. Thanks again.

There have always been trade offs when going to larger screen sizes. Previously, you had to live with front/rear-projection in order to get past ~36" size, now you have a lot more options and much lower prices. What's to complain about?

Back in 2001, I paid over $2,000 for a 32" Sony HD CRT (with a 4:3 aspect ratio, over 200lbs). Sure the picture was good, but can you honestly complain about what your $2,000 can buy you today versus back then?

Try to remember that the BB stores are less than ideal for judging the performance of the sets you are looking at. I haven't looked at any of the new sets, I don't wanna know how far behind I am.:o

I'm sure you will find something you can be happy with. Good luck!;)

See if you can find a geek squad guy or tech from an AVS store who does calibrations on the side, usually for about $75 bucks you will see a huge improvement in picture quality and heat generated.

Still amazes me that the Kuros still blows just about everything out of the water, I will hawk for one for the upstairs room once I get the LSi system ordered.

Damn, missed it bro. That is a kick **** deal you got. I will keep my eyes open but I feel I may be relegated to second-class citizen ownership of a Panny.

How hot does the Kuro get? FL and more heat don't mix.

It gets warm but not hot.I have a 60 inch Pioneer Kuro but it's not in a small room so I don't notice heat at all.

Thanks, I have vaulted ceilings in the room the panel will go, I am just concerned about long term reliability as heat kills electronics. Some of the Panny and Sammy plasmas I have seen get pretty hot on top. Especially since thesse will be wall mounted with less room to breath.
