Something to do with the fact that you can actually feel "movement", for want of a better word, when you do so, and that you are actually transmitting some sort of "pressure" to the gears, or something like that, causing wear. I don't know how true it is, nor do I really care, since I don't drive a manual anymore!

Actually, even in automatics, I downshift when slowing down almost always, except on the truck: that big ol' GM three speed is not really designed to be "shifted". Three gears on a truck, when towing a steel trailer and two horses, really sux big time IMO: it just isn't enough, so on all the inclines, you end up clunking the clumsy selector into second and sitting at about 3,000 RPM and 50 mph maximum.
    Alea jacta est!

I skip from 3rd to 5th in the Mazda, since it's capable of going from 30mph to the speed where they skip the ticket and go straight to the rubber hose beating in about... 2 seconds in 3rd gear.

The Celica, i don't skip gears. The ratios are too screwy. I take every gear up to 3000rpms then shift. ~18mph in 1st, 28mph in 2nd, 45mph in 3rd, 55mph in 4th, 70 in 7th.
I don't read the newsssspaperssss because dey aaaallllllllll...... have ugly print.

It says right in my car manual not to ever rest your hand on the stick, it creates wear on the forks for the gears and can wear it out.

    Forks and also synchros, yes.

That being said, i'm very guilty of this. But.... my 232k mile car still seems to shift like new. :D
