Nice setup! The sub looks sweet.

Have a few questions about your setup though since mine will be similar.

I'm getting the rti a5's next week since I've read everytime people post about the rti series the a5's have better midrange. How do you feel about the a7's and the midrange performance? The a9's will requre more money to power them properly with a amp so I ruled them out.

Also on your new fxi a4's I was under the impression they had to be the same distance from each other as the front channels? You may want to try to spread em out farther. Seems the way your chairs are setup if your on one of the end chairs the right and left back surrounds will both sound like they are comming from only one side of you. But if you did that you may also consider pulling the chairs away from the back wall so you can move your side surrounds farther from the wall to get get some space between those side and rear surround speakers.

You are right. My speaker positioning is not by the book considered optimal. The room does not really allow me the flexibility to do that. BUT.... it still sounds killer good to me.

With the dipole side surrounds, the main objective is to get them directly to the side of the main listening position and slightly above ear level. To do that, I then have them about 16inches out away from the back wall. The effect is good and the dipole setting gives the room the sense of being filled with sound.

Then as far as the rear surrounds go.... I would have preferred to have them spaced a bit further apart. But again the reality of the room got in the way of optimal positioning. So I did the best I could. I justified it by thinking if I had a 6.1 system, there would be no spacing at all between the 2 rear surrounds since there would only be one rear surround. Since these speakers face forward, I wanted them set to the bipole setting. Where you want the dipole speakers to be non-directional, you want the opposite effect with the rears. I want the directional sense of the rear channel to localize fly overs, foot steps, etc. The positioning of the rears and the bipole setting accomplished these objectives. Again, I saw very little reason to obsess over rear speaker seperation when a 6.1 set up would allow no spacing at all.

The end result was all good and it works better than I ever imagined it would.

On your RTi speaker questions.... I did audition all 3 (A5, A7, and A9) when I bought the A7's. I just preferred the sound of the A7. I also wanted to power the speakers without a separate amp and had a 130w Onkyo 806 that I wanted to utilize, so the A9's were out. The A9's also have a better low end capability and if I was going to add the better sub, I did not feel like I needed the A9 for the better bass performance. Between the A7 and the A5, I just thought the A7 had a fuller and more precise sound. Nothing wrong with the A5! I just personally liked the A7. I think it is important to go audition these and actually listen to them to make a good decision. I found that Frye Electronics in Dallas had them all set up so I went there to make my choice.

    Good luck with your system!

i would have to agree with ls7z06 in that the a7's sounded more "complete" (to my ear's anyway's) as compared to the a5's.

I listened to both a5 and a7's at american. Powered by the yamaha 1900 i think it was. I figured i could always add a sub to fill out the sound and couldn't add a midrange. Thats how I came to a decision. Both do sound really good. I really like 3 way speakers though. I might have to get a 2 channel rig sometime with some lsi's. :)

Bummer about the room limitations guess everyone has to make some sacrifices though. As long as it the 2 back channels improve the listening experience then its all good.

I might have to post some pics of my setup next week when my a5's come. Always nice to see peoples gear. We need more pics on this forum!

Personally I like the A5's out of the bunch for HT and the A9's the best for music. With a musical sub the a5's rock!!!!

All in all the RTI a series are a great value.

    Nice setup!.

I love those angled tables-perfect for the application-where did you get them? Brand?

In my old townhouse, I had a finished loft. Looking back I can picture doing exactly what you did, had I been in a position back then to setup a dedicated HT.

The tables were a good find. The furniture store where I bought the Lazy Boys had them. Unfortunately, the tables are not well marked and the furniture store receipt did not say a brand. I did check for you. There was a label that said T00-219-22, Black Home Theater Table, Made in Thailand. Sorry I could not more helpful.

Forget the speakers, that living space is awesome. Nice decor and setup. Not a lot of stuff floating around. One whole room dedicated to visual and audio pleasure. Can not get better than that.
